Overview

Sr. Systems Engineer, Managed Operations — AWS is introducing the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC). We are seeking experienced senior systems engineers with a strong background in automation and operations to lead and build operations and development teams delivering high-availability AWS services for EU customers, including EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, and Bedrock.

The ESC launch is targeted for 2025. You will collaborate with global AWS teams, influence the evolution of AWS services, and contribute to day-to-day operations to improve availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency. Occasional on-call rotations are required to resolve incidents outside of regular hours. You will help deliver scalable services and a high-availability experience for EU customers.

This role is part of the AWS Managed Operations team within AWS Utility Computing (UC) and supports Compute, Database, Storage, Iot, Platform, and Productivity Apps services. Managed Operations engineers engage with AWS customers who require specialized security solutions for cloud services.

Responsibilities

- Oversee the launch and ongoing operation of the ESC in 2025, collaborating with global AWS teams.
- Lead and build high-performing operations and development teams focused on high availability and customer satisfaction.
- Collaborate with technology leaders to enhance day-to-day operations and improve availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency.
- Participate in on-call rotations to resolve incidents outside of business hours.
- Influence the evolution of AWS services and technology to meet EU customer needs.

Eligibility requirements

- Fluency in written and spoken English.
- Legal right to work in Germany.
- Amazon relocation support available for successful applicants relocating within the European Union.

Qualifications

- BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: 9+ years of systems engineering experience (hardware, software, networking, operating systems); proficiency in creating, revising, or improving SOPs; proficiency in operational best practices; scripting in Bash, Python, or Ruby; strong troubleshooting for performance, reliability, or availability of software systems.
- PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working cross-organizationally and leading strategic team efforts; mentoring junior engineers; performance tuning and fleet optimization; experience with Infrastructure as Code (CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible or similar).
