Overview

Associate Researcher (maternity cover) in the Centre for Justice and Law Reform at the Law Society of Ireland (Law Society).

The Centre will, in fulfilment of a multi-annual research programme, develop thought-leadership on matters having access to justice, fundamental rights, and law reform at their heart. The Centre will publish a series of evidence-based, impactful research papers each year which reflect a deep consideration of topics falling within its thematic focus.

The Associate Researcher will work closely with the Head of Research and the Director of Policy to develop and deliver evidence-based research outputs in fulfilment of the Centre’s aims.

The Associate Researcher’s work will assist in advancing the Centre’s mission of promoting evidence-based reform in the Irish legal system and broader justice landscape.

The role provides opportunities for the Associate Researcher to deepen their expertise, lead discrete projects, and engage with a broad network of stakeholders in the legal and academic sectors, as well as with policy makers.

Responsibilities

- Assist the Head of Research in the implementation of the multi-annual programme of research.
- Conduct accurate, high-quality legal research and analysis, and draft evidence-based and authoritative research papers on topics within the thematic focus of the Centre.
- Progress legal research projects, delivering high standards of research, legal analysis, and legal writing.
- Assist the Head of Research in the development of proposals for law reform, underpinned by credible arguments that are reflective of the public interest and the interests of members of the Law Society.
- Support the Head of Research in the publication of a series of research papers which demonstrate a real depth of research, a deep consideration of policy issues, and make a positive contribution to policy development.
- Assist in the organisation of debates, roundtable events, panel discussions, public meetings, etc. on issues relating to the Centre’s research focus.
- Assist the Head of Research and Communications colleagues in the execution of a communications plan to increase awareness of the work of the Centre.
- Engage closely with colleagues in the Policy Department as well as with colleagues across all other Departments within the Law Society.
- Monitor developments (including caselaw, legislation, and academic commentary) in relation to the Centre’s areas of focus.
- Engage with stakeholders on matters pertaining to the research themes and outputs of the Centre; attend events related to the Centre’s work as a representative of the Centre.
- Such other duties as may be assigned by the Head of Research.
- Serve as Secretary to a Law Society Committee or Task Force.

Knowledge & Skills Required

- A third-level qualification in law, public policy, human rights or similar is required. A professional qualification would be desirable.
- At least two year’s relevant experience in legal research and writing.
- A strong understanding of the policy development process, legislative process, and legal systems in both Ireland and the European Union.
- Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills, with attention to detail and a high standard of accuracy.
- Ability to evaluate complex legal and policy issues and distil them into clear, concise writing that informs and engages legal practitioners and non-practitioners alike.
- Experience of utilising legal databases (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis) and academic research tools.
- Solution-oriented, highly collaborative, and self-motivated.
- Strong organisational and interpersonal skills.
- Self-motivated as well as being highly collaborative.
- An excellent command of written and spoken English.
- An ability to meet deadlines and a track record of success in handling competing demands.
