Summary of Post The Research Ireland ARC Hub for HealthTech is a collaborative initiative between the University of Galway, Atlantic Technological University (ATU), and Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, to guide academic projects in the MedTech and Connected Health sectors to commercial success on a national scale in conjunction with other Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in the Republic of Ireland. The ARC Hub, hosted by University of Galway, will support the translation of cutting-edge research into real-world applications and equip innovators with the knowledge and acumen needed to bring transformative healthcare technologies to market. The overall vision of the ARC Hub for HealthTech is to support Ireland's Smart Specialisation Strategy (S3) and drive growth in the Northern and Western Region by creating a world-class hub that translates MedTech and Connected Health innovations into effective chronic disease management solutions. One of the projects being developed by the ARC Hub for HealthTech will be led by Dr. Grace O'Malley in the RCSI Obesity Research and Care Group to address child and adolescent obesity management. We are seeking a dynamic and experienced developer/engineer/post-doctoral computer scientist to develop relevant technology that leverages data-driven solutions, artificial intelligence, and user-centred design. The candidate should have experience designing, developing, implementing, testing and scaling sustainable and usable digital health technologies. The candidate will work closely with stakeholders across the ARC, including the project principal investigator, the project research team and the wider ARC team. We seek an individual who has an excellent understanding of the medtech and connected health landscape, who is goal-driven, proactive, meticulous and highly collaborative and whose goal is to take the next career step in a fast-moving, pioneering and dynamic environment. This role is pivotal in driving the success of the ORCG's aim to improve management of child and adolescent obesity. We're looking for someone that is purpose-driven and feels passionate about child health, paediatric healthcare delivery and creating innovative Medtech and Connected Health innovations. Specifically, the duties of the post are: Build on previous work which tested a digital intervention prototype in a clinical trial with adolescents. Develop maintainable code optimized for performace and scalability, adhering to best practices and coding standards. Take end-to-end responsibility for the design, development, testing and quality of your deliverables. Design, implement, and maintain solutions for the digital health platform and applications. Collaborate with stakeholders to translate healthcare needs into scalable technical solutions. Develop and optimise algorithms for data analysis, visualization, and decision support. Ensure compliance with healthcare data security, privacy, and interoperability standards (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR, HL7/FHIR, EHDS Regulation 2025/327). Develop system architecture, database design, and integration of external health data sources and devices (e.g., wearables, EHRs). Test, debug, and document software in accordance with best practices. Stay current with emerging technologies in digital health, AI/ML, and health informatics. Ensure applications perform securely, efficiently, and consistently across modern browsers and devices. Track progress of the project against the agreed development plan and key deliverables to ensure the project meets quality standards and is delivered on time and within budget. Contribute expertise in user experience and interface design, advocating for intuitive, user-friendly solutions. Proactively identify and manage project risks and facilitate problem-solving, contingency planning, and decision-making to resolve problems and minimise delays. Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute innovative ideas to enhance our products and technology stack. Qualifications - (Essential): Minimum of 5 years relevant industry experience as a Full Stack developer/software architect/ software engineer OR PhD in computer sciences, engineering or technology development plus 2 years of relevant post-doctoral experience Knowledge & Experience - (Essential): Strong programming skills in one or more languages (Python, Java, C++ or Java). Proficiency with web and/or mobile frameworks (e.g., React or Angular). Strong understanding of core web technologies including HTML5, CSS3, and the DOM. Solid understanding of software development life cycle (SDLC), version control (Git), and agile methodologies. Experience with relational and non-relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL or MongoDB). Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes). Knowledge of data security, encryption, and best practices for handling sensitive health data. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging abilities. Experience working in Agile environrments with multidisciplinary stakeholders. Ability to write clear, maintainable, and well-documented code. Knowledge & Experience - (Desirable) Experience with healthcare standards and interoperability frameworks (FHIR, HL7, DICOM). Background in digital health, telemedicine, or health informatics research. Understanding related to integration of digital health solutions with EPIC electronic health record systems (e.g., via EPIC APIs, SMART on FHIR, or EPIC App Orchard). Exposure to AI/ML techniques, biomedical signal/image processing, or predictive analytics. Understanding of regulatory requirements for medical software (FDA, CE, ISO 13485). Experience applying user-centred design principles in healthcare applications, with an emphasis on usability testing and co-design with patients, families, and clinicians. Knowledge of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG, Section 508) and inclusive design practices to support diverse users, including those with disabilities. Familiarity with ethical considerations in handling sensitive health, behavioural, or psychological data from minors. Understanding of telemedicine platforms, virtual clinical consultation workflows, or integration of video and communication technologies into healthcare systems. Knowledge of consent/assent processes, safeguarding, and data governance frameworks for research or clinical care involving young people. Sensitivity to user experience design that promotes trust, safety, and inclusivity for children and adolescents.
