Position Job Title: Clinical Lead for AL
Remuneration: This is a sessional engagement role. Remuneration will be provided on a sessional basis, reflecting the nature and flexibility of the Clinical Lead for AI’s advisory and advocacy contributions.
Role Purpose
The Clinical Lead for AI is a senior clinical advocate and advisor, responsible for championing the safe, effective, and strategic adoption of artificial intelligence across RCPI’s clinical and professional communities. The role works in close partnership with the RCPI AI Lead, providing clinical insight, sectoral leadership, and expert guidance to ensure that AI governance, enablement, and sector engagement are aligned with RCPI’s strategic plan to transition AI capability from current level 1 on the AI maturity assessment framework to level 3 by 2029.
Requirements 1. Clinical Advocacy & Sector Leadership
Act as the primary clinical advocate for responsible AI adoption, promoting best practices, ethical standards, and the benefits of AI across RCPI’s clinical membership and the wider healthcare sector.
Engage clinicians in understanding and applying AI tools (as relevant) in clinical workflows, communication, and decision-making.
Represent RCPI in national and international forums as a clinical thought leader in AI, contributing to policy development and sharing RCPI’s journey and best practices.
2. Strategic Advisory & Governance
Provide expert clinical input to the development and refinement of RCPI’s AI Governance Framework and Maturity Enhancement Programme, ensuring alignment with clinical needs, sector trends, and regulatory requirements.
Advise on potential clinical AI use cases, supporting the AI Lead in identifying high-impact opportunities for adoption and innovation.
Support the publication and dissemination of key AI policies and clinical survey findings.
3. Enablement & Change Champion
Advocate for AI literacy and enablement programmes among clinicians, researchers, and educators, encouraging participation and sharing insights to inform internal guidance and change management.
Champion responsible AI use, promoting ethical, fair, and transparent practices in clinical settings.
Act as a conduit for feedback from clinical stakeholders, ensuring that the AI Lead and governance body are informed of emerging needs, challenges, and opportunities.
4. Council & Executive (Board) Level Champion
Serve as a clinical champion at RCPI Council and Executive (Board) level, advocating for the adoption of AI tools (as relevant) and the progression of high-impact use cases that support business transformation, process optimisation, and time savings.
Provide clinical insight and strategic advice to Council and Exec on the benefits, risks, and opportunities of AI adoption, ensuring that clinical perspectives inform decision-making and resource allocation.
Support the AI Lead in presenting progress, challenges, and opportunities related to AI maturity, internal enablement, and sectoral impact at Council and Board meetings.
Promote a culture of responsible innovation and continuous improvement at the highest levels of RCPI governance.
Key Working Relationships
The execution of duties will involve close collaboration with RCPI AI Lead, RCPI Senior Leadership Team and staff, clinical and academic stakeholders and external partners (as relevant).
Qualifications and/or experience
Medical degree and registration with the Medical Council.
Significant clinical experience, ideally with exposure to digital health, clinical informatics, or healthcare innovation.
Demonstrated interest or involvement in artificial intelligence, data science, or digital transformation within healthcare.
Experience in clinical leadership, advocacy, or advisory roles at institutional, sectoral, or board level.
Track record of engaging with multidisciplinary teams, professional bodies, or external partners (e.g., academic, research, industry).
Experience presenting, publishing, or communicating complex topics to clinical and non-clinical audiences.
Familiarity with governance, ethics, and regulatory frameworks relevant to AI in healthcare (e.g., EU AI Act, GDPR, Responsible AI).
Skills, competencies and/or knowledge
Deep understanding of clinical practice and healthcare systems.
Awareness of current and emerging AI technologies, tools, and their applications in healthcare.
Strong advocacy, communication, and influencing skills with an ability to engage clinicians, senior management, and external stakeholders.
Strategic thinking and ability to provide expert advice on AI adoption, governance, and transformation.
Knowledge of ethical, legal, and regulatory considerations for AI in clinical settings.
Ability to champion change, promote responsible innovation, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
Collaborative mindset, with skills in partnership working and stakeholder engagement.
Commitment to professional development, AI literacy, and sector-wide capability uplift.
Experience working with industry and technology solution providers to support clinical innovation and AI adoption.
Awareness of machine learning principles and data-driven approaches in clinical contexts, particularly around prediction and evidence-based decision-making.
