Senior Scala Developer – Team Lead

My client is looking for an experienced Scala Developer to Lead a new team. The Role

You’ll have solid hands-on experience in Java, Scala and cloud platforms like AWS, with good experience scaling systems and driving architectural decisions. The role focuses on server-side logic, database management, API development, and integration with front-end components, ensuring high performance and reliability for enterprise applications. You’ll be key in the development of cutting‑edge products and platforms, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

You’ll Design and build high-performance, stable, scalable systems that will be deployed in an enterprise setting. Lead high-level architecture discussions and planning sessions. Collaborate with cross-functional teams of engineers, product managers, and designers.

Build scalable, performant, and resilient backend systems that support critical business needs. Participate in system design and architecture reviews to influence technical direction. Drive software quality through code reviews, testing, and continuous integration.

Aim to add to and nurture a positive engineering culture through mentorship, knowledge sharing, and leadership at your level. Investigate and resolve complex technical issues in production environments.

Author/ review tech design documents, RFCs, and root cause analyses. Key to the role is expand your own engineering craft and domain knowledge. Participate in an on-call rotation to ensure resolution of production outages involving your systems.

Experience/Skills Needed

10+ years’ experience with proven track record leading a team of developers. Ability to develop and execute innovation roadmaps and provide advanced operations capabilities. Solid hands-on Java and Scala experience. In-depth AWS experience. Strong understanding of engineering software processes, lifecycle methodology, configuration management, release management, and system verification and testing.

Ability to work independently and oversee entire projects on occasion. Senior level technical knowledge with the ability to influence system architecture across teams or domains. Comfortable leading the dev team, creating a positive and nurturing team environment.

Track record of delivering high-impact projects with significant architectural ownership. Command of the tech; comfortable making decisions to guide complex trade-offs and tech decisions.

Solid experience scaling systems to handle high throughput and low latency. Able to mentor, elevate peers, and lead cross-team technical initiatives. Good experience driving quality, reliability, and operational excellence at scale. Able to align technical direction with company goals, comfortable with tech strategy. Be the tech guide in decisions on distributed systems, functional programming, or cloud-native architecture.

Nice to have (not must haves):

Some experience with Golang & Python. Previous experience contributing to engineering culture, hiring, or team/organisational design/development.
