Staff Nurse - Recovery (Fixed Term Maternity Cover)

Overview of Role
UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic are currently recruiting for a Staff Nurse to join our Recovery department in Theatre. This is a full time specified purpose fixed term position for 11 months to cover maternity leave.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The position reports to and is accountable and professionally responsible to the CNM 1, Recovery/Theatre Manager and the Director of Nursing in all matters relating to the job.
- Provide, maintain and develop patient‑centred care to a high standard in the Theatre and overall administration of the unit.
- Maintain awareness of patient primacy in all clinic activities.
- Create a culture of accountability, openness to change, respect and teamwork.
- Promote healthy working relationships.
- Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the clinic.
- Accountable for nursing service in pre‑operative and post‑operative areas, ensuring best possible standard of care at all times.
- Communicate with relatives and visitors as required.
- Set and monitor standards.
- Participate actively in the clinic’s Accreditation programme, Continuous Quality Improvement, and implement procedures in theatre.
- Keep the Director of Nursing apprised of all issues as required.
- Liaise with the Director of Nursing to ensure efficient use of patient care consumables and communicate changes to staff.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Liaise with Director of Nursing, Clinical Nurse Managers and support staff to maintain high quality service.
- Collaborate in planning future service developments.
- Communicate with floor‑level managers to ensure continuity of nursing care and safe transfer of patients.
- Promote learning environment and staff retention.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, fire and other statutory regulations.
- Drive change management to meet department needs.
- Communicate with wards and other departments to ensure safe transfer of patients to Day Ward and In Patient ward.
- Maintain safe custody of controlled drugs.
- Coordinate and monitor use of resources to prevent unnecessary expenditure.
- Document and report incidents and near misses per clinic policies.
- Contribute to audit regarding quality care, nursing standards and manpower planning.
- Attend mandatory in‑service training.
- Monitor Infection Control policies and liaise with Infection Control Nurse.
- Enforce health and safety standards.
- Use judgement to manage crisis situations.
- Observe and uphold cleaning standards.
Qualifications & Experience
- Registered General Nurse, registered with An Bord Altranais on the live register.
- Minimum 4 years post registration experience; at least 3 years in theatre/recovery.
- Orthopaedic experience desirable.
- Opportunity to train in specialist disciplines such as Orthopaedics.
- Experience managing a team of nurses and ideally in an orthopaedic facility.
- Computer literate.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritise, manage multiple issues and pay attention to detail.
- Free from defect or disease unsuitable for the role and in good health.
- Good character.
- Garda Vetting required.
