Relief Staff Nurse Theatre - UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

- The Staff Nurse reports to and is accountable to the Director of Nursing and Theatre Manager in all matters relating to the job.

- Take responsibility for a caseload of patients in which you will assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care.

- Practice within the Code of Practice, Rules and Guidelines set out by An Bord Altranais and comply with Policies and Procedures of the Sports Surgery Clinic.

- Be held responsible to the Theatre Manager and, in her absence, to the delegated CNM holding shift responsibility for the theatre.

- Practice within the limits of your experience.

- Possess a clear understanding and commitment to the ethos and philosophy of the Sports Surgery Clinic.

- Maintain awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all clinical activities and uphold a high standard of nursing care.

- Create and promote healthy working relationships and demonstrate behaviour consistent with the Clinic’s values.

- Ensure each patient is treated as an individual with privacy and confidentiality maintained at all times.

- Participate in the Clinic’s Accreditation programme and the ethos of Continuous Quality Improvement.

- Keep CNMs and the Theatre Manager informed of issues as required.

- Maintain professional standards of nursing practice and liaise with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure patient-focused care of the highest standard.

- Ensure safe lifting techniques when assisting in movement of patients and equipment.

- Ensure accurate labelling, dispatch of specimens, and maintenance of data related to theatre statistics.

- Preserve the dignity and rights of patients during their stay in the operating department, whether anesthetised or conscious.

- Complete and ensure legible clinical and legal documents in accordance with SSC guidelines.

- Maintain pharmacy stock levels and adhere to SSC policies and procedures; respect patient confidentiality at all times.

- Ensure that nursing care is based on the latest research findings and constitutes best practice.

- Adhere to safety procedures related to swabs, instruments, needle counts, and infection control.

- Demonstrate initiative and openness to new ideas and development.

Qualifications & Experience

- Be a Registered Nurse and eligible to register with An Bord Altranais on the General Division of the live register.

- A recognised Theatre or Anaesthetic Course is desirable but not essential.

- Two years post-registration theatre experience.

- Experience: ideally able to manage patient care to high professional standards using evidence-based care planning; computer literate; excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

- Ability to work on own initiative, prioritise and manage multiple issues, and demonstrate attention to detail.

- Ability to identify potential difficulties and formulate solutions.

- Must be in good health and of good character.
