Relief Staff Nurse Theatre - UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic

Overview of role

We are looking to hire a Relief Staff Nurse in Theatre to work shifts based on department requirements on a casual basis.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Staff Nurse reports to and is accountable to the Director of Nursing and Theatre Manager in all matters relating to the job.

- Take responsibility for a caseload of patients: assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care.

- Practice within the Code of Practice, Rules, and Guidelines set out by An Bord Altranais and comply with Policies and Procedures of the Sports Surgery Clinic.

- Be held responsible to the Theatre Manager and, in her absence, to the delegated CNM holding shift responsibility for the theatre.

- Practice within limits of experience.

- Maintain awareness of patient primacy and high standard of nursing care.

- Create and promote healthy working relationships.

- Demonstrate behaviour consistent with clinic values.

- Ensure privacy and confidentiality.

- Participate in clinic accreditation programme and continuous quality improvement.

- Keep CNMs and Theatre Manager appraised of all issues as required.

Professional Responsibilities

- Practice within Code of Practice, Rules and Guidelines of An Bord Altranais and clinic Policies.

- Ensure each patient as an individual; respect physical, psychological and religious wellbeing.

- Provide direct patient care in selected situations and serve as behavioural model.

- Maintain safety and wellbeing of patients, relatives, staff in accordance with SSC policies.

- Set standards of nursing practice and communicate them; audit and adjust as necessary.

- Liaise effectively with multidisciplinary team ensuring patient‑focused care.

- Maintain professional behaviour standards across nursing team.

- Facilitate effective communication with patients, relatives and team.

- Adhere to patient identification policy.

- Maintain equipment clean, checked daily and handle faulty equipment per policy.

- Use safe lifting techniques when moving patients and equipment.

- Anticipate needs of multidisciplinary team during operative process.

- Report incidents, drug defects, accidents, complaints.

- Maintain harmonious working environment.

- Assist in care, labelling and dispatch of specimens for laboratory examination.

- Accurate data collection in theatre for statistics.

- Preserve dignity and rights of patients in operating department.

- Complete clinical and legal documents accurately per SSC guidelines.

- Maintain pharmacy stock levels per policies.

- Ensure patient confidentiality is respected.

- Base nursing care on latest research findings; ensure best practice.

- Follow safety procedures for swabs, instruments, needle counts, hazards.

- Demonstrate initiative and receptiveness to new ideas.

Qualifications & Experience

- Registered Nurse and eligible to register with An Bord Altranais on General Division of the live register.

- Recognised Theatre or Anaesthetic Course is desirable but not essential.

- Two years post‑registration theatre experience.

- Demonstrate evidence‑based care planning and highest professional standards.

- Computer literate.

- Excellent interpersonal skills and proven written and verbal communication.

- Ability to work on own initiative, prioritise, manage multiple issues simultaneously, attention to detail.

- Free from defects or disease impairing service.

- Good character.
