Overview

Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist in Paediatric Orthopaedics / MSK. Purpose and scope of the role in the Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) network.

Responsibilities

- The post holder will live CHI values and be child-centered, compassionate & progressive, acting with respect, excellence and integrity.
- Provide overarching leadership of Physiotherapy hip pathways, including both complex and non-complex cases throughout the lifespan, including but not limited to DDH.
- Collaborate in the management of other Paediatric Orthopaedic congenital conditions as required.
- Assess and treat patients referred for physiotherapy with advanced clinical reasoning and knowledge.
- Demonstrate evidence-based practice through clinical reasoning and decision making in complex cases.
- Participate in the wider Musculoskeletal/Orthopaedic Service, including development of care pathways for other pathologies and groups in collaboration with other MSK Clinical Specialists.
- Represent the MSK team within the Physiotherapy Department in collaboration with the other MSK service leads.
- Manage clinical caseload in MSK Orthopaedics appropriate to the grade of Clinical Specialist, ensuring capacity and complexity alignment.
- Collaborate with MSK Physiotherapy service leads to manage waiting lists in line with targets.
- Provide clinical support, advice, teaching and training to promote clinically effective MSK orthopaedic physiotherapy interventions, including weekend in-patient MSK services.
- Undertake clinical supervision and contribute to competency evaluation of Senior and Staff Grade physiotherapists delivering MSK Orthopaedic services in CHI.
- Engage in performance appraisal and PDP with the Physiotherapy Manager.
- Engage in and arrange clinical supervision (peer, mentorship, etc.) to underpin own clinical practice.
- Participate in the education and supervision of physiotherapy assistants, students and other staff as required.
- Develop, manage and annually evaluate the musculoskeletal service in line with professional standards and in agreement with management.
- Lead single discipline and multidisciplinary research and audit projects.
- Advise and support changes in work practices aligned with best practice developments in musculoskeletal orthopaedic physiotherapy.
- Participate in mentoring and development of senior and staff grade physiotherapists; act as a resource for planning, service development and evaluation.
- Lead collaborative planning and continued development of integrated cross-site musculoskeletal services across all CHI locations.
- Plan integrated cross-site MSK / Orthopaedic Services as part of CHI.
- Engage with national initiatives as a tertiary hospital Paediatric Clinical Specialist lead on engagement and clinical guidance for colleagues nationally.
- Provide appropriate physiotherapy treatment for each patient under care, with regard to the CORU Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics and maintain CORU professional development and competency.
- Participate in mandatory and in-service training and share specialised knowledge with colleagues.
- Ensure a safe working environment for patients and staff and report any accidents per hospital policies.
- Read and act upon all hospital and departmental policies.
- Participate in the hospital out-of-hours physiotherapy service.
- Undertake other duties as assigned by the Physiotherapy Manager or Deputy.

Qualifications

- Hold current CORU registration (physiotherapy qualification recognized by the Physiotherapists Registration Board at CORU); candidates must state CORU registration number on application.
- Five years of full-time (or equivalent) post-qualification clinical experience, of which three years are in Paediatric Musculoskeletal / Orthopaedic Physiotherapy.
- Demonstrate evidence of recent formal continuing professional development relevant to the required area of specialism, in the form of postgraduate qualifications or relevant courses.
