Electrical Engineer Career

As an electrical engineer you will be responsible for designing and maintaining electrical control systems, equipment, and machinery. You can work in a variety of areas including:
Building and manufacturing of plant and machinery
Power distribution, diffusion and invention
Renewable energy sources such as hydroelectric, solar paneling and wind turbines
Transportation networks including rail electrification
Building services such as heating, ventilation, lighting and lift systems
Responsibilities
Your duties and responsibilities can include:
Using computer‑aided engineering and drawing software for task planning
Calculating project timescales and costs
Participating in meetings, delivering presentations and preparing reports
Supervising maintenance and inspection programmes
Ensuring projects meet safety regulations
Organising the work of craftsmen and technicians
Testing systems and analysing test data
Evaluating viability of emerging technologies
You will generally work with experts such as engineering technicians, architects, IT staff and civil engineers on projects.
Qualifications, Education and Experience
Electrical engineers should hold a degree, HNC, HND, BTEC, or a degree in electronic and electrical engineering. Other relevant subjects include mechanical engineering, building service engineering, applied physics, aeronautical engineering and mechatronics.
With a degree in a relevant subject, you can join a company's Graduate Apprenticeship Scheme.
Training Details
It is necessary to continue building knowledge and skills throughout your career via continuing professional development (CPD). You can progress towards chartered or incorporated status by registering with the appropriate professional body and applying to the Engineering Council. As an incorporated engineer you will focus on everyday management of engineering operations, while at chartered level you will undertake research, innovation, planning and management strategy.

Salary and Other Benefits
Graduate engineers: £22,000 – £25,000 per annum
Skilled incorporated engineers: £29,000 – £40,000 per annum
Chartered electrical engineers: £41,000 – £50,000 per annum
Working Conditions
You will normally work 38 to 40 hours per week, with occasional overtime to meet deadlines. Your workplace may be a workshop, production plant, office, power station, factory or research facility.
Opportunities
Typical employers include manufacturers, local authorities, armed forces, public utilities, IT companies and research & development firms. With experience you can specialise in research and development, project management or consultancy, and may have international opportunities.
