Post Doctoral Researcher – The Researcher would primarily contribute to the delivery of the TALX2 project but would be expected to contribute to across a number of climate change projects as part of the MaREI Centre. The TALX2 project is an Environmental Protection Agency funded project, focusing on the creation and advancement of transboundary place-based climate adaptation partnerships on the island of Ireland. This position offers the opportunity for an ambitious climate and social scientist with a background in climate adaptation/resilience and stakeholder engagement, to join this exciting partnership and make a meaningful contribution to the delivery of these projects.
Senior Post Doctoral Researcher - The researcher would primarily lead research on the TALX2 project but would be expected to provide expert input across a number of climate change projects as part of the MaREI Centre. The TALX2 project is an Environmental Protection Agency funded project, focusing on the creation and advancement of transboundary place-based climate adaptation partnerships on the island of Ireland. This position offers the opportunity for an ambitious climate and social scientist with proven expertise and experience in climate adaptation/resilience and stakeholder engagement, to join this exciting partnership, provide leadership and ensure the effective delivery of these projects.
Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI’s. This can be reflected in the starting pay of a PD researcher. Similarly, as the PD scheme is an intergenerational training scheme completion of PD1 or PD 2 levels in one HEI will normally render that researcher ineligible for appointment at a similar level in another Irish HEI Researcher Career Development Framework | Irish Universities Association
The primary focus of the Postdoctoral Researcher will be research however a particular emphasis during this stage should include;
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- To conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator/Project Leader.
- To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator, School or College in order to develop research skills and competencies.
- To gain experience in grant writing.
- To engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which they are engaged, as directed by, with the support of and under the supervision of a Principal Investigator.
- To become familiar with the publication process.
- To acquire generic and transferable skills (including project management, business skills and postgraduate mentoring/supervision).
- To engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of the research group, School or College.
- To interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and possibly have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day-to-day research in conjunction with an academic supervisor.
- To carry out administrative work to support the programme of research.
- To carry out additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
- To contribute to costing research grant proposals and assist in the financial management of a research project.
- To work effectively and collaboratively with colleagues on the delivery of the TALX2 project, and to proactively contribute to the development of aspects of the work.
- To work in active partnership with project partners to ensure the timely achievement of project deliverables and milestones, including regularly attending meetings, both remotely and in-person.
- To contribute strongly to the successful running of the project, ensuring scientific excellence, as well as contributing to the publication of project outputs across different platforms including in peer-reviewed publications.
Specific Requirements
Selection Criteria:
- A PhD qualification in a related discipline (e.g. Environmental Science, Geography, Climate Change/ Adaptation/Resilience).
- Appropriate research experience (e.g. climate change/adaptation/resilience).
- Appropriate technical competence and accomplishment.
- A capability of working within a project team to achieve results.
- Good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
- A commitment to gaining practical experience working on a research project.
- Ability to work well within a team.
- Knowledge of climate vulnerability, including from a socio-economic perspective.
- Knowledge of relevant national and international adaptation policies and legislation.
- Experience in the management of, or participation in, large scale research projects focussing on climate action would be an advantage.
- Knowledge of, or experience in, participatory approaches to climate decision making and stakeholder led management techniques (leading and designing workshops).
- Appropriate technical competence and accomplishment, in particular knowledge of Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
