Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €3bn, 14,758km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in Europe. Over 720,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs. The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy and almost 50% of the country’s electricity generation. Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities. The Role:
The Network Operations function within Gas Networks Ireland is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Transmission and Distribution networks, executing all field work safely and efficiently in line with all relevant legislation, standards, industry codes and practices. Reporting to the Senior Field Operations Engineer (C&I), the Field Operations Engineer C&I is responsible for managing all planned, reactive, corrective and emergent C&I operational activities on the Network in the Southern region.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Delivery of all C&I operational activities planned, corrective, reactive and emergent across the gas Network.
- Managing the safe calibration of fiscal metering systems in accordance with all relevant Industry, National and European standards and legislation.
- Managing the safe calibration of all process related instrumentation in accordance with all relevant Industry, National and European standards and legislation.

- Managing the delivery of all planned, reactive, corrective and emergent activities relating to electrical maintenance and corrosion protection (CP) work programs.
- Providing flexibility to work across regions as required to address operational needs as they arise.
- Contributing to the maintenance and operation of the Distribution and Transmission SCADA/DCS.
- Managing all C&I operational activities in line with GNI Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.
- Building strategic relationships across key areas within Networks to ensure operational priorities are reflected across all relevant policies, procedures, plans and schedules.
- Ensuring ATEX compliance is maintained across operational installations.
- Developing a competency framework within C&I field operations and the promotion of a career path model for all working in C&I field operations.
- Managing the relationship with our Contractors to identify operational risks and issues that may give rise to incidents or outages on the networks or contribute to schedule or budget overruns.
- Participate in the on-call rota as required.
- Contributing to the continued improvement of internal operational processes and procedures across the Operations area.
- Performing other duties as assigned from time to time.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Proven technical competence is essential – Engineering degree or other relevant qualification desirable.
- A minimum of 5 years relevant experience working with Instrumentation and Control Systems.
- Proven track record working in hazardous areas with ATEX certified equipment.
- Proven track record operating and maintaining SCADA / Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
- Proven track record managing the calibration of process instrumentation systems within a heavily regulated environment.
- Proven ability to create and develop good working relationships to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals, coupled with the ability to gain commitment from others.
- Experience with identifying improvement opportunities, generating ideas and implementing solutions.
- Have excellent analytical skills and be able to identify and analyse problems and potential improvements, and propose and implement solutions.
- Ability to set up ongoing procedures to collect and review information as needed.
- Proactively identifying new areas of learning and using newly gained knowledge and skill on the job.
- Ability to set own high standards of performance and delivering desired results.
