Senior Progress Database Administrator
Location: Ireland OR UK with 20% international travel
Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week (Mon–Fri)
About the Role
We have an exciting opportunity at DP World within our Group Technology team. We are recruiting a Senior Progress DBA to report to the Database Manager Europe. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the design, implementation, and management of robust Progress OpenEdge database and web infrastructure solutions across DP World’s European operations. Our ideal candidate will be a Senior DBA with Progress OpenEdge 11 and 12 experience as well as experience Installing Tomcat and Apache, also possessing strong Linux experience.
How You Will Contribute
- Lead the installation, configuration, and management of Progress OpenEdge 11 and 12 environments, including PASOE, across development and production stages.
- Design and deploy scalable, secure, and high-availability database and web infrastructure solutions.
- Collaborate with infrastructure and Linux teams to troubleshoot performance issues and optimise configurations.
- Maintain thorough documentation of configurations, processes, and repeatable tasks to ensure operational continuity.
Web Infrastructure & Application Support
- Install and configure Apache HTTP Server and Apache Tomcat to support Progress environments and related applications.
- Manage web infrastructure components including load balancers, DNS, reverse proxies, and certificate management.
- Work with development teams on web deployment strategies, security initiatives, and best practices.
Monitoring & Maintenance
- Monitor production and replication environments using OpenEdge Management, Graylog, OpenTelemetry, and other observability tools.
- Perform routine database maintenance including re-indexing, dump/load operations, integrity checks, and patching.
- Implement schema changes and database modifications in alignment with change management protocols.
Project & Service Delivery
- Design and deploy new Progress environments across Dev, QA, UAT, sandbox, and production.
- Conduct performance benchmarking and trend analysis to track system metrics and capacity utilisation.
- Identify and implement automation opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Provide strong service-oriented support to internal development and application teams.
- Act as a technical lead and escalation point for database and web infrastructure issues.
- Support internal/external audits and compliance requirements.
What You Will Bring
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
- Alternatively, 10+ years of relevant experience or equivalent professional training and certifications.
Experience
- Extensive experience with Progress OpenEdge (versions 11 and 12), including PASOE.
- Proven expertise in database administration, performance tuning, and replication.
- Strong knowledge of web infrastructure: Apache, Tomcat, DNS, reverse proxies, load balancers.
- Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Windows, Microsoft Azure, and cloud technologies.
- Skilled in Bash scripting for automation of database tasks.
- Familiarity with ITIL-aligned environments and formal change management processes.

- Exceptional problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
- Highly organised and detail-oriented.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and infrastructure planning tools.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across multicultural teams.
- Fluent in English; additional languages (e.g., Arabic, Spanish, French, Mandarin, Hindi) are a plus.
- Willingness to travel internationally up to 25%.
