Position Summary:

The post holder will be part of the Inpatient Orthopaedic Service in Beaumont Hospital Physiotherapy Department. This post is for the Orthopaedic Early Supported Discharge Service and will involve developing pathways of care for patients exiting the acute hospital. A significant proportion of this role will involve providing post-acute domiciliary care to patients discharged home following Orthopaedic intervention. Cross cover and competence to manage the Inpatient Orthopaedic service will be required.

Responsibilities

Operational

1. In collaboration with the physiotherapy team, be responsible for developing, organising, implementing and evaluating the physiotherapy service in the Beaumont Hospital.
2. Contribute to service provision planning and delivery of care across the broad physiotherapy team, with specific focus on service provision within own physiotherapy service.
3. Ensure a safe working environment for patients and staff at all times, and act upon all issued staff policies.
4. Assess and manage risk in their assigned area(s) of responsibility.
5. Take the appropriate timely action to manage any incidents or near misses within their assigned area(s).
6. Report any deficiency/danger in any aspect of the service to the team or Physiotherapy Manager as appropriate.
7. Be accountable for the budget, where relevant.
8. Carry out the duties of a Senior Physiotherapist in the hospital and at such other locations as may be required by the Chief Executive or designated officer. The Senior Physiotherapist may be expected to rotate between St. Joseph’s Hospital, Raheny, and Beaumont Hospital.
9. Provide expert advice and guidance for other healthcare professionals, patients and carers.
10. Carry a caseload of patients who have been referred to the Physiotherapy Department.
11. Attend relevant departmental and multidisciplinary meetings and will be involved in strategic planning for patients referred to the Physiotherapy Department.
12. Ensure that the Physiotherapy Manager is informed on an on-going basis about matters, clinical and otherwise, affecting the running of the specialist area.
13. Record clinical and non-clinical activity data for the service, and submit monthly data reports as stipulated by the physiotherapy manager. Prepare an annual service plan and service report to be submitted to the physiotherapy manager.

Professional

1. Ensure that a high standard of physiotherapy assessment and treatment is provided for all patients within his/her area of responsibility.
2. Demonstrate evidence based practice through the process of clinical reasoning and decision making, allowing knowledge to be applied to complex/different situations.
3. Ensure that all requests for physiotherapy treatment within his/her speciality are allocated to appropriate staff, and liaise with relevant medical staff for maximum effectiveness of treatment, discharge and follow up.
4. Maintain patient records and to collect statistics as required by the department and service and in accordance with departmental, hospital and professional standards.
5. Contribute to business planning and business cases.
6. Take a lead role in service development as relevant to role.
7. Liaise with staff of other disciplines in providing multi-disciplinary services for certain groups of patients.
8. Participate and be a lead clinician as appropriate in review meetings, case conferences etc.
9. Liaise with services outside the hospital to provide continuing care for patients.
10. Provide a service in varied locations in line with local policy/guidelines and within appropriate time allocation (e.g. clinic, home visits).
11. Comply with the delivery of standards in the assessment, treatment and management of patients in line with international best practice guidelines.
12. Work within own scope of professional competence in line with principles of best practice, professional conduct and clinical governance.
13. Promote a culture that values diversity and respect in the workplace.
14. Provide supervision and conduct appraisals for staff grade physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants as required.

Education and Research

1. Participate in mandatory training programmes.
2. Manage, participate and play a key role in the practice education of student therapists in partnership with universities and clinical educators.
3. Teach, advise and supervise junior staff including participation in in-service training.
4. Participate in teaching programmes for other professionals and ancillary staff.
5. Lead, promote and ensure clinical effectiveness of the physiotherapy service through performance management, education, audit and research.
6. Be a resource of speciality advice within the hospital.
7. Take responsibility for, and keep up to date with physiotherapy practice by participating in continuing professional development such as reflective practice, in service, self-directed learning, research, clinical audit etc.

Key Working Relationships:

The Senior Physiotherapist will work collaboratively with other physiotherapists, medical, nursing and other health and social care professionals across the acute and community services in providing optimal clinical care and in further developing the service. Establish links with other organisations, both national and international where appropriate, providing support and information regarding this clinical area, and utilising these additional resources where necessary, to benefit patient care. Work with the Physiotherapy Manager in ensuring co-ordination, development and delivery of high quality, client centred physiotherapy service.

Accountability:

Senior Physiotherapist will report to Physiotherapy Manager in Charge III for physiotherapy clinical governance, attendance and service performance management.

Qualifications

Selection Criteria:

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post. Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.

Mandatory:

1. Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc

1. Hold a Physiotherapy qualification recognised by the Physiotherapists Registration Board at CORU.

2. Be registered on the Physiotherapists Register maintained by the Physiotherapists Registration Board at CORU.

3. Applicants who satisfy the conditions set out in Section 91 of the Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005, must submit proof of application for registration with the Physiotherapists Registration Board at CORU.

2. Have three years full time (or an aggregate of three years full time) post qualification clinical experience.
3. Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

Additional Skills

- Be available to work on call rota for respiratory and orthopaedic services as required by physiotherapy management and have the necessary training at undergraduate level.
- Access to own transport to fulfil required duties.

Desirable:

- 6 months experience in relevant area.
- Further training (e.g. M.Sc.) in relevant clinical area.
- Previous senior grade experience in the acute hospital setting.
