Reporting to the Consultant Radiologist or other designated supervisor the position of Clinical Specialist Radiographer Radiation Protection, requires an ability to lead, guide and supervise Radiographic staff and to successfully manage and oversee all matters relating to Radiation Protection within the department. The ability to manage in a rapidly changing environment and willingness to undertake such additional duties as may be assigned from time to time are essential. Key Responsibilities: 1. Undertake primary responsibility on a day- to- day basis for the implementation and supervision of Radiation Protection within the Radiology Department. 2. Be accountable for the quality of the service provided, including customer service and technical aspects. 3. Contribute to the development and implementation of operational policies, protocols and guidelines to ensure all legislative requirements regarding Radiation Protection are met and adhered to. 4. Maintain accurate records relating to: - Personnel Dose Monitoring - Developing Quality Assurance Programmes and maintain accurate records on all Radiographic Equipment - Maintain accurate logs of all potential or actual radiation incidents and inform the Radiation Safety Committee and liaising with the Radiation Protection Institute of Ireland as appropriate. 5. Hold a key role on the hospital Radiation Safety Committee. 6. Formulate, lead and participate in Clinical Audits within the department, both specific to Radiation Protection and in general clinical areas. 7. Conduct and record performance testing following routine and emergency maintenance of equipment, in conjunction with Medical Physics Department. 8. Promote and maintain a safe environment for staff and patients, including adherence to ALARA principles. Advise and assist in the development of Risk Management and Health & Safety strategies. 9. Develop and maintain a training and education role with relation to staff both within the department and hospital wide, ensuring that all hospital policies and relevant legislation regarding Radiation Protection are understood and complied with. Supervise and assess all aspects of training and education as required. 10. Promote and participate in research projects involving Radiation Protection and maintain up to date knowledge regarding developments, requirements and legislation. 11. Advise and participate in procurement of new Imaging equipment from a Radiation Protection perspective. 12. Perform any radiographic duties as required in specific areas of the department. Finance 1. Contribute to financial planning and ensure that appropriate budgetary control procedures are implemented. 2. Assist the Consultant Radiologist in the financial management of issues relating to Radiation Protection within the department i.e. purchase, replacement and maintenance of protective aprons etc. 3.Manage the use of consumables efficiently. Quality Assurance 1.Lead and co-ordinate the work of the QA team within the Radiology department. 2.Assist in leading changes in work practices, procedures and techniques having regard to developments in the field of QA and in accordance with updated legislation and best practice. 3. Identify defects in QA equipment and ensure that recalibration of equipment is organised as required. 4. Receive and record details concerning out of range dose readings and investigate the circumstances with appropriate staff and report findings as required. 5. Facilitate the arrangements necessary and participate where appropriate, in education and training of Radiology staff in QA, DAP meter outputs and recording of data. Particular attention is required when dealing with the introduction of new modalities, new technologies and recording of information on future RiS/PACS that may be introduced into the Radiology department. 6. Attend meetings, internal and external, relevant to QA and Radiation Protection and keep Radiology staff briefed on all new developments. Experience, Knowledge and Qualifications: Experience Essential: Candidates for appointment must be registered, or be eligible for registration, on the Radiography Division of the Radiographers Register maintained by the Radiographers Registration Board (CORU). AND Have not less than 6 years full time (or an aggregate of 6 years full time) post qualification clinical experience. AND Have not less than 4 years practical experience working in the speciality. Practical clinical experience will include time assigned to work in the relevant specialist area but needs to comply with the following breakdown: A minimum of 12 weeks assigned to work in the relevant specialised area will be required for each relevant year to be counted. AND Possess a minimum of 10 postgraduate ECTS credits or equivalent in the relevant speciality, as recognised by the IIRRT. A wide range of experience in all aspects of radiography is desirable. Knowledge Candidates must possess the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability, management, leadership and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office. AND Provide proof of Statutory Registration on the Radiography Division of the Radiographers Register maintained by the Radiographers Registration Board at CORUbefore a contract of employment can be issued. Practitioners must Maintain annual registration on the relevant division of the radiographers register. Qualifications A first line qualification in Radiography, as recognised by the DoH, Ireland and eligibility for membership of the IIR. A Radiation Protection Course recognised by the IIR Other Personal Attributes Required ESSENTIAL: Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. A knowledge and understanding of the principles surrounding Radiation Protection. Familiarity with current Radiation Protection rules and regulations and EU directives. Ability to lead a team within the area and to play an integral leadership role within the department. Understanding and approachable with staff at all levels within the department and Hospital. Flexible when called upon. Empathy with patients. Have a keen interest in personal development. Foster a learning environment in the workplace.
