Primary Duties And Responsibilities Perform ECG recording/interpretation and highlight abnormal findings.
24/72 hour Ambulatory ECG monitoring and analysis
24-hour blood pressure monitoring (ABP) monitoring and analysis
Cardiac Physiologist–managed exercise stress testing (EST) and reporting
ICD/CRT/PPM implant, follow up, troubleshooting and reporting
Remote monitoring and reporting of cardiac implantable loop recorders
Transthoracic echocardiography (scanning and reporting)
Transesophageal echocardiography
Cardiac resuscitation
Cardiac catheterisation including angiography and PCI procedures, right heart catheterisation, IVUS, FFR/iFR and IABP
DC cardioversions
Electrophysiology studies, mapping and ablation (to commence January 2024) including FARAPULSE PFA technology
The candidate will undertake in-house and external CPD training. The hospital provides practical and in-service training at a higher level, with some theoretical tuition from senior staff at UPMC Whitfield Hospital.
There is a strong, dynamic multidisciplinary team in the Cardiology Department. An open communication structure is encouraged for learning through case studies. The candidate will have opportunities to excel in all cardiac diagnostic investigations, with emphasis on learning, CPD, and examinations. Exposure to a wide range of conditions/pathologies within a multidisciplinary team is expected. The department uses an advanced clinical cardiology management system for immediate physiologist reports post-diagnosis.
Professional / Clinical Perform resting ECG, exercise testing (medical and physiologist-led), ambulatory ECG and BP monitoring
Pacemaker and ICD/CRT follow-up under supervision until competent
Transthoracic echocardiography and reporting under supervision until competent
Assist with transoesophageal echocardiography
Assist with diagnostic and interventional procedures in the Cath Lab
Assist with pacemaker and implantable defibrillator procedures
Assist in electrophysiology studies, mapping and ablation techniques
Report procedure findings and highlight abnormal results
Participate in on-call rota as required
Maintain standards of practice for self and staff; manage own caseload and assess, plan, implement and evaluate cardiac diagnostic services
Foster professional relationships with colleagues and other healthcare personnel
Ensure quality of documentation aligns with local service and professional standards
Communicate results and reports to the relevant team and consultants as per service policy
Participate in multidisciplinary teams; attend clinics, meetings, and case conferences as designated
Carry out duties in a timely manner per local policy
Adhere to standards and protocols and contribute to quality improvement and outcome measures
Maintain confidentiality, ethics and legislative compliance
Education and Training Participate in mandatory training programmes
Engage in continuing professional development including in-service training, conferences/courses, and research as agreed by the Chief Cardiac Physiologist
Engage in supervision with Managers and participate in performance reviews
Health and Safety Promote a safe working environment in line with health and safety legislation
Be aware of and implement policies, procedures and safe professional practice
Participate in risk management, identify risks and take corrective actions
Report adverse incidents per organisational guidelines
Administrative Coordinate and deliver cardiac investigations service
Review and allocate resources with the Chief Cardiac Physiologist
Promote best practice and uniform standards
Regularly review and evaluate the Cardiac Investigations Department service; develop service/business plans and quality initiatives with the Chief Cardiac Physiologist
Maintain accurate records in line with governance and FOI requirements; render reports and statistics as required
Consult with the Chief Cardiac Physiologist on staff needs and views
Promote teamwork and diversity
Assist in stock and equipment management and IT developments relevant to service users and administration
Stay up to date with organisational and Irish Health Service developments
Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Cardiac Physiologist

Qualifications & Experience Essential Statutory Qualifications & Experience – Possess the BSc in Clinical Measurement from Technology University Dublin or Dublin Institute of Technology, or an equivalent Level 8 scientific qualification confirmed by the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Physiology (IICMP). If qualified in or prior to 2005, the Certificate in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurement (MPPM) from Dublin Institute of Technology or an equivalent qualification as confirmed by IICMP.
Post Specific Requirements – Essential experience in: performing, interpretation and reporting of 12-lead ECGs; performing, interpretation and reporting of cardiologist-led exercise ECG; ambulatory ECG and BP monitoring.
Desirable – experience in catheterisation haemodynamic monitoring and PCI/IVUS/FFR/ABP procedures; echocardiography reporting; cardiac implantable device implantation and follow up; electrophysiology studies, mapping and ablation.
