Senior Staff Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Global R&D Innovation Centre, Cork

Work Style: Hybrid

This role is true R&D where you as a Snr Staff Engineer will be part of a group that has complete design control for all extremities power tools. In Cork, the team owns the strategy and the portfolio. The team meets with the surgeons and gains a lot of clinical exposure. You will work with a multi-disciplinary team including software, electrical, and mechanical.

Who we want:

Designs and develops mechanical component assemblies or subassemblies for mechanical and/or electromechanical medical devices.

What you will do:

Technical Responsibilities:

1. Lead research, design, development, modification, and evaluation of modules, assemblies, or subsystems.
2. Apply and mentor others on advanced engineering theories, principles, and concepts.
3. Translate user needs to design inputs/specifications and produce complex system level designs independently.
4. Conduct, design, and select advanced prototyping and testing.
5. Lead and guide in correction of complex product design issues.
6. Conduct technology exploration and influence application in the business.
7. Develop invention disclosures, patents, or trade secrets.

Business Responsibilities:

1. Contribute to competitive and market strategy by demonstrating in-depth knowledge of the market, customer dynamics, and competitive offerings.
2. Apply strong understanding of clinical procedures to enhance product development.
3. Contribute and execute customer-facing activities like voice of customer and customer-centric design in partnership with internal and external stakeholders.
4. Demonstrate financial acumen.

Compliance:

1. Mentor others as a business unit expert on the usage of industry standards, including design requirements and test strategies per applicable regulations.
2. Lead others to create and refine engineering documentation, such as the Design History file and create more progressive technical content.
3. Contribute to R&D procedures and development of industry standards working closely with cross-functional business units.

General Responsibilities:

1. Work cooperatively with R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing, and Project Management to ensure project success.
2. Identify and lead the creation of or improvements to procedures, policies, processes, systems, and technology required.
3. Develop, research, and prototype, leveraging multiple methodologies for evaluation.
4. Contribute to complex product development through release and lead one technical area of expertise.
5. Hold self and others accountable to deliver high-quality results with passion, energy, and drive to meet business priorities.
6. Mentor, develop, and inspire others in current and future roles.
7. Collaborate and influence others on cross-functional teams advancing partnerships to achieve business objectives.

Required Qualifications:

1. Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or BioMedical & 6+ years of mechanical design work experience.

Preferred Qualifications (Strongly desired):

Technical Skills:

1. Experience in developing and optimizing complex designs for mechanical/electromechanical assemblies incorporating DFM principles.
2. Experience in creating engineering drawings, models, applying GD&T, and CAE tools to optimize the design.
3. In-depth knowledge of materials, manufacturing, and processing methods and technologies to support complex product development.
4. Ability to communicate complex plans and technical information to team members.
