Position Summary:
The Decontamination Supervisor role is to ensure the smooth running of the unit reprocessing surgical instrument / flexible scopes and provide cross cover for Decontamination Supervisor in alternate service (CSSD or Endoscope Decontamination Service). The decontamination supervisor answers directly to the Deputy Decontamination manager and in turn to the decontamination manager.
Responsibilities
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Reports to the Deputy Decontamination Manager
- Demonstrate Professional Leadership at all times.
- Be responsible for the delivery of decontamination services when on duty
- Complete all mandatory training as required
- Participate in teams / meetings / committees as appropriate, communicating and working in co-operation with other team members (Eg Hygiene, Theatre user group, Local area decontamination service meetings).
- Assist in the co-ordination, co-operation and liaison across healthcare teams and programmes regarding sterile services
- Assist in the provision of reports of all testing, assessments and support recommendations to the team and relevant others in accordance with service policy.
- Ensure that all staff are treated with dignity and respect.
- Ensure accurate record keeping in accordance with Beaumont Hospital Policy

- Maintain professional standards in relation to confidentiality, ethics and legislation.
- In consultation with the Deputy Decontamination Manager, relevant staff and other disciplines, support implementation and assess quality management programme changes.

- Support systems to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence-based approach to the reprocessing and traceability of surgical instruments and flexible endoscopes.
- Assist in the evaluation and the implementation of best practice policy and procedures in conjunction with the Deputy Decontamination Manager and relevant stakeholders.
- Manage efficient day to day use of resources and workforce planning
- Ensure that effective safety procedures are followed and managed to comply with statutory obligations, in conjunction with relevant hospital staff.
- Maintain a high standard of communication among the Decontamination team and with other members of staff.
- Contribute to the formulation, development and implementation of policies and procedures at area and hospital level. Ensure all staff adhere to set protocols and procedures. Support regular reviews of same to ensure best practice
- Facilitate team building and staff motivation.
- Exercise control of all Department equipment and ensure maintenance of same through the appropriate personnel.
- Ensure all shift patterns, procedures, urgent requests and deliveries to St Joseph’s Hospital & other off site locations under remit of Beaumont Hospital are met.
- Ensure all non conformances are documented in relation to your area of control
- Ensure all instruments to be sent for repair are recorded and managed through the decontamination process in line with current standards
- Ensure the management of instrument storage in the decontamination area is in line with current standards.
- Ensure the transportation of instruments and soft pack to the operating department, wards and other areas in the hospital are in line with current standards
- Oversee the role of Decontamination Technicians and ensure highest standards of decontamination practices are maintained.
- Develop a knowledge of RIMD, flexible endoscope and ultrasound reprocessing management
- Cross cover the decontamination supervisor from alternative decontamination services when required
- Deputise for the Deputy Decontamination Manager when required
- Engage in continuing professional development by keeping up to date with decontamination literature, recent research and new developments in decontamination management, education and practice and to attend staff study days as considered appropriate.
- Participate in the identification, development and delivery of induction, education, training and development programmes for Decontamination staff.
- Provide support and supportive supervision to the decontamination technicians
- Engage in performance review processes including personal development planning as appropriate.
- Exercise leadership in the running of the assigned area(s).
- Evaluate policies/practices in consultation with the Deputy Decontamination Manager in relation to service provision.
- Investigate complaints and provide a timely response in accordance with hospital protocol.
- Assist in co-operation and co-ordination of services to Theatre/Endoscopy, St Josephs Hospital and all other hospital departments.
- Contribute to the strategic management and planning process.
- Ensure sufficient supplies of supplementary items are available for the timely reprocessing of all RIMD
- In conjunction with the deputy decontamination manager work to ensure in so far as is practical the Decontamination Department is compliant with all local / regional / national recommendations, guidelines and standards including National Standards for Safer Better Healthcare.
- Support the implementation, maintain and evaluate quality process and standards in relation to Decontamination Services reprocessing and equipment usage.
- Participate in data collection for statistical analysis and projects when necessary.
- Maintain appropriate records and logs with full historical records for each item of equipment / surgical instrumentation processed within the department.
- Support the further development of clinical and administrative computerisation.
- Assist with preparation of weekly duty rosters, ensuring appropriate skill mix to meet clinical workload requirements.
- Maintain and regularly review use of decontamination facilities, maximising their potential use.
- Seek to develop new ways to provide services to meet needs presented to the department.
- Be familiar with and assist in development and implementation of the major incident plan, when required.
- Provide understanding of activity, available services and gather information regularly for reports. Work in collaboration with relevant staff to identify the training needs of staff and ensure they are updated regularly.

- Work in collaboration with the Deputy Decontamination manager. Theatre ADON, Technical Services/Engineering Department, IPC CNS, and other Department Heads to develop process improvements.
- Be responsible and accountable for all quality and safety issues relevant to the service to which they are assigned.
- Exercise a defined role in the personnel function.
- Promote, nurture and maintain a high level of staff morale, promoting team spirit and job satisfaction.
- Participate in the development of staff orientation and induction training programmes for all hospital staff as required.
- Ensure all staff practice within the HSE standards and recommended practices for the decontamination of RIMD.
- Manage behaviour outside acceptable limits to include performance, conflict, grievance, discipline, absenteeism, etc. in accordance with Hospital and Board policy.
- Maintain, update and develop knowledge on relevant professional developments and current trends in decontamination.
- Participate in research and audit.
- Regularly review current practices and implement change once agreed with the decontamination manager.
- Perform basic troubleshooting on faulty machinery and where safe to do so perform minor repairs/part replacement to keep machinery in good working order. Escalate to manufacturer when issue cannot be solved locally in a timely manner to increase availability of machinery for decontamination purposes
- Maintain minutes of decontamination meetings as assigned by deputy decontamination manager
- Compile reports as requested e.g. competency, quality assurance, incidents

Qualifications
Selection Criteria:

Mandatory:
- Hold FETAC level 6 award or equivalent in decontamination of RIMD or be in the process of undertaking same.
- Hseland National Decontamination Programme completed
- Have a minimum 3 years’ experience in decontamination of RIMD services
Desirable:
- Have 3 years experience in a supervisory experience in a similar size department would be an advantage
- Have obtained Lv7 or Higher Decontamination related qualification
