Job OverviewThe Photonics Packaging Group is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to contribute to EU and industry-led projects in advanced photonics packaging.This role involves working closely with the team to develop new technologies, solve engineering challenges, and adapt packaging techniques for applications in communications, biomedical devices, quantum technologies, and other emerging fields.Key Responsibilities
  • Fiber and micro-optical packaging of photonic devices: Design, development, and implementation of efficient packaging methods for photonic devices.
  • Testing and alignment of photonic devices: Evaluation of packaged device performance through testing and alignment procedures.
  • Development of packaging processes: Creation of novel packaging processes for a range of photonics applications, including automation of assembly and testing steps.
  • Modelling of micro-optical and mechanical components: Mathematical modeling of micro-optical and mechanical components to optimize packaging designs.
  • Managing academic and industry-funded research projects: Effective management of research projects, ensuring timely delivery and high-quality results.
  • Preparation and presentation of technical reports: Preparation of detailed technical reports and presentations to communicate research findings to stakeholders.
  • Contributing to project delivery within an ISO-controlled environment: Collaboration with the team to deliver projects within an ISO-controlled environment, adhering to quality management standards.
  • Participating in education and public engagement activities: Participation in educational and public outreach activities to promote awareness of photonics research and its applications.
  • Ensuring compliance with health and safety standards: Adherence to health and safety standards, ensuring a safe working environment for all staff members.
Essential Criteria
  • PhD in physics, engineering, or a related discipline: A doctoral degree in a relevant field, demonstrating expertise in photonics or related areas.
  • Research experience in photonics: Proven research experience in photonics or a relevant area, including hands-on experience with experimental setups and data analysis.
  • Strong communication and technical report writing skills: Excellent communication and report-writing skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Experience presenting research to technical audiences: Experience presenting research findings to technical audiences, including conferences, workshops, and peer-reviewed publications.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience in free-space optics and optical sensing: Familiarity with free-space optics and optical sensing techniques, including design, development, and implementation of optical systems.
  • Experience working in a cleanroom environment: Previous experience working in a cleanroom environment, with knowledge of best practices for maintaining a contamination-free environment.
  • Hands-on experience with free-space optical alignment processes and tools: Practical experience with free-space optical alignment processes and tools, including software and hardware used for precision alignment.
  • Exposure to automation tools or process automation in an R&D or production setting: Familiarity with automation tools and process automation concepts, including experience with implementing automation solutions in R&D or production environments.
