About the Role

The position of Laboratory Manager is now available at NovaUCD, Dublin. This laboratory provides in-house analytical capacity to a science team that focuses on enhanced weathering.

This facility includes a custom autotitrator for automated analysis of pH, electrical conductivity and total alkalinity of aqueous samples as well as an ion chromatograph for measurement of aqueous anions. It also includes a range of soil and aqueous sample preparation equipment such as ovens, fridges and shakers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform soil and soil-water sample preparation and analysis
  • Develop and maintain protocols for record-keeping suitable for a high-sample-throughput laboratory
  • Maintain, operate and calibrate a suite of analytical equipment
  • Train staff to use the equipment
  • Maintain a database of sample analyses
  • Evaluate the quality assurance and control across all analytical instruments
  • Order supplies and maintain inventory
  • Write and update standard operating procedures and risk assessments
  • Maintain health and safety standards in the laboratory
  • Contribute to geochemical data processing and interpretation in collaboration with the science team

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • A PhD in a relevant branch of natural sciences (e.g., soil biogeochemistry, low-temperature geochemistry, soil science, hydrochemistry, geosciences) or a BSc/MSc with 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience working in wet and/or geochemical laboratories
  • Ability to work flexibly in a dynamic environment
  • Familiarity with analytical equipment software, especially chromatography software, is advantageous
