Review of Large Energy Users Connection Policy

The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) has published a proposed decision paper on the Large Energy Users connection policy, outlining a potential pathway for new data centre customers to connect to the electricity grid while ensuring security of supply and network constraints.

Ireland has set ambitious targets for renewable energy production, with significant success in delivering renewable energy projects. The country is also a leader in digital technologies, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and ICT infrastructure and devices.

Large Energy Users, particularly data centres, have driven a step-change in electricity demand growth, with their consumption rising from 5% to 21% of Ireland's total demand between 2015 and 2023. The CRU published a consultation paper in a recent year, which will inform any resulting decision under Section 34 of the 1999 Electricity Regulation Act.
