Ecologist Job Description

The role of an ecologist is crucial in maintaining the balance of nature and ensuring sustainable development.

As a professional with a strong background in ecology, you will be responsible for supporting various projects including habitat and species surveys, ecological impact assessments (EIAs), Appropriate Assessments (AAs), and biodiversity action plans.

  • Conduct thorough ecological surveys to assess habitats, flora, and fauna, including protected species assessments.
  • Assist in preparing detailed reports on Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs) and Appropriate Assessment (AA) reports under the Habitats Directive.
  • Provide expert input into biodiversity strategies, conservation management plans, and habitat restoration projects.

You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams including planners, engineers, and environmental consultants. The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field.

A minimum of 2+ years of experience in ecological consultancy or conservation is required.

  • Strong knowledge of Irish and EU biodiversity legislation and policy.
  • Experience conducting protected species surveys (e.g., bats, birds, amphibians, mammals) and habitat assessments.
  • Proficiency in GIS mapping software (ArcGIS, QGIS) is desirable.

The ideal candidate should also possess excellent analytical, reporting, and communication skills. Fieldwork skills and ability to work in remote outdoor environments are essential. A full, clean driving license is required for site visits.
