Adoption and Tracing Service Social Worker

The role of the social worker in this adoption and tracing service involves supporting individuals and families through the reunification process, providing counseling and guidance throughout. This is a unique opportunity to work with survivors of mother and baby homes, facilitating family reunifications, and conducting interviews related to retrospective child abuse investigations.

The ideal candidate will have a recognized qualification as a social worker, be CORU registered, or eligible for registration. Some experience working within a similar type of adoption or retrospective service is required, along with excellent interviewing, report writing, and counseling skills. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential, as well as permission to work in Ireland and a professional approach to work.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provision of counseling and support to survivors of mother and baby homes
  • Supporting and counseling clients in preparation for birth family reunion
  • Genealogy and birth family searching
  • Facilitating family reunification meetings
  • Providing post-reunification support and counseling to families
  • Conducting interviews with adults reporting retrospective abuse
  • Engaging with persons subject to abuse allegations
  • Assessing any risks involved
  • Reporting cases of concern, where appropriate
