Job Overview

The role of Principal Economics Consultant involves collaborating with our team to provide economic input into transportation and infrastructure projects. This includes preparing Economic Impact Assessments and appraisal documents, as well as providing economic advice to government departments and policymakers.

The ideal candidate will have a clear understanding of public sector economics and policy, as well as experience in carrying out economic consulting projects. They will be able to take ownership of complex projects, manage client relationships, and communicate results to diverse audiences.

A key responsibility of the role is to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, identify opportunities for business growth, and drive sales through effective bid management and delivery. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute ideas and innovative approaches to projects, collaborate across AECOM to develop and realise business growth opportunities, and provide guidance to junior staff.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Technical excellence in carrying out economic consulting projects
  • Take ownership of complex projects, delivering on time and within budget, meeting client expectations
  • Manage the relationship between AECOM and clients as assignments progress
  • Manage projects in accordance with AECOM project management processes and internal systems
  • Communicate the results of work to diverse audiences
  • Identify opportunities for the AECOM economics team and convert these into sales
  • Drive sales through effective bid management and delivery while ensuring proposals are commercially viable
  • Work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Contribute ideas and innovative approaches to projects
  • Collaborate across AECOM to develop and realise business growth opportunities
  • Provide guidance to teach and develop junior staff
Qualifications and Requirements

To be considered for this role, you should have:

  • A degree or Masters in economics (e.g., economics, finance, mathematics, geography, engineering) from an accredited institution, or overall equivalent experience
  • Excellent technical skills and strong personal initiative
  • Experience in a similar consulting role, public sector organisation or industry
  • Public sector focus; many clients are government or statutory agencies
  • Working knowledge of infrastructure business case, economic analysis (cost-benefit, cost-effectiveness) and financial appraisal guidelines in Ireland or internationally
  • Experience monetising non-market benefits using revealed preference, stated preference, or benefit transfer methods
  • Ability to convey complex economic issues to diverse audiences clearly and concisely
  • Experience in business development related to new opportunities
  • Strong analytic, data management, statistics, economic modelling and econometric capabilities
  • Experience developing solutions to issues such as infrastructure investment, labour markets, education and skills, deprivation and social inclusion, inward investment and business development
  • Preparation of clear, well-written reports based on project outcomes
  • Experience and interest in transport sector economics; knowledge of climate change, sustainability or tourism economics is advantageous
