Thermal Systems Design Engineer

A specialist energy company is seeking a skilled engineer to develop, design, construct, operate, fund (if required), and maintain multi-technology assets for accelerating towards zero carbon in various sectors.

The company's core values are collaboration, innovation, urgency, and integrity. Their core technologies include solar PV, battery energy storage, and heat pumps, which offer significant growth prospects over the next 20 years.

Due to ongoing growth and expansion, this role involves concept-to-commissioning responsibilities with a focus on process design, mechanical design, equipment selection, and system integration, including opportunities to work on innovative technologies like heat pumps and thermal storage.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in designing complex high-temperature heat pump systems, integrating them into clients' processes, and demonstrating strong theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

  • Develop detailed heat and mass balance calculations for thermal systems and create process flow diagrams.
  • Analyze process performance data to inform design decisions, optimize system efficiency, and improve energy efficiency.
  • Establish process simulation models to evaluate system behavior and design alternatives.
  • Contribute to developing P&IDs and control philosophies detailing system operation and logic.

As part of a team, you will need to exhibit leadership skills to develop less experienced engineers and use resources effectively.

Key Responsibilities:Process Design & Analysis:
  • Prepare technical specifications, review vendor bids, and support procurement processes.
  • Evaluate project risks and recommend design alternatives when necessary.
Equipment and Piping Design:
  • Design piping systems including line sizing, routing, and hydraulic calculations.
  • Apply knowledge of heat pump technology to enhance system performance.
Construction and Commissioning Support:
  • Provide field engineering support during construction, testing, and commissioning.
Project & Documentation Coordination:
  • Participate in internal and external project meetings with clients, consultants, and vendors.
