Postdoctoral Research Fellow: Solar Physics and Space Weather

We are seeking a highly skilled Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join our team in the Astronomy & Astrophysics Section. The successful candidate will be primarily involved in an EU H2020 Project, ARCAFF, which aims to enhance active region classifications and flare forecasts using deep learning techniques.

The project combines over 26 years worth of solar observation with state-of-the-art techniques to improve flare forecasting accuracy. The successful candidate will collaborate with researchers locally and internationally on data preparation and development of deep learning models.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in creating training datasets for flare forecasting
  • Collaborate on developing and training deep learning models for flare forecasting
  • Contribute to integrating developed models into SolarMonitor.org
  • Present research at international conferences and publish in reputable journals
  • Liaise and collaborate with other ARCAFF researchers

Requirements:

  • Doctorate in solar physics, heliospheric physics, machine learning, or related discipline
  • Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with data analysis using scientific Python stack (e.g., NumPy, Matplotlib, SciPy, Astropy, SunPy)
  • Experience with preparing and analyzing solar data, particularly EUV images and magnetograms
  • Experience with developing and applying deep learning models to solar observations
  • Continuous integration and development tools (e.g., GitLab, GitHub)

Salary and Benefits:

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary starting at Level 2A Point 1 of the public sector regulations. The appointee will also be entitled to annual leave, sick leave, and pension benefits.
