The Commission has published a proposed decision paper outlining a potential pathway for connection applications from new data centre customers to the electricity grid, balancing security of supply and network constraints while minimizing impacts on national renewable energy targets and carbon emissions.
BackgroundIreland aims to become a global leader in renewable energy production, with significant success in delivering renewable energy projects. The country is also a world leader in digital technologies, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and ICT infrastructure and devices. Many data centres have invested in setting up operations in Ireland, providing employment opportunities and data services.
In recent years, there has been a step-change in electricity demand growth driven by Large Energy Users (LEUs), largely due to data centre developments. Electricity consumption used by data centres rose from 5% of Ireland's total demand in 2015 to 21% in 2023, accounting for 85% of overall electricity demand growth.
Consultation ProcessInterested parties are invited to respond to this proposed decision via the consultation portal, informing a decision to be published later. Responses should address the outcome of this work, which will inform any resulting decision under Section 34 of the Electricity Regulation Act, applying to all new connection contracts for new or additional capacity captured under the scope of the decision.
