About the role:

As a Senior Commercial Engineer in the Construction and Engineering industry, reporting directly to the Senior QS in a Mechanical contracting business, your primary responsibility is to commercialise hi-tech semi-conductor projects & manage project commercials. You'll collaborate closely with Quantity Surveyors, Project Controls, and Project Managers, leveraging your expertise in engineering & commercials to optimize commercial strategies and ensure efficient commercial management within construction projects.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Review, analyse, compare, measure & commercialise mechanical system designs in Irish Semi-Conductor projects in conjunction & independent of engineering team.
  • Ability to read and interpret BIM BOM's and Navisworks Freedom Files
  • Ability to read, understand & interpret LSP's, P&ID's, A&ID's, Mechanical Specifications, Mechanical Equipment Schedules & Revit Models is essential.
  • Ability to track and analyse excel based Schedule of Rates & IFC Measures to establish sales v cost on large scale project.
  • Historical engineering qualification and/or experience is essential.
  • Ability to use MS Excel to commercialise complex designs using Schedule of Rates & Bill of Quantities.
  • Ability to present commercial output information for budgets against procurement & buying.
  • Packaging of sub-contractor packages, Issue of RFQ's, analysis of returns and appointment of sub-contractor packages on projects.
  • Development of construction validation. Taking tender documents & tender cost base and re-align to construction spend plan along with risk analysis.
  • Interpret cost trends, variances, and performance metrics to provide actionable insights for enhanced commercial decision-making.
  • Aid in the development of accurate cost forecasts and projections based on comprehensive data analysis of actual to date data.
  • Collaborate closely with commercial manager to devise and implement cost-efficiency strategies driven from data based decision making.
  • Assist in formulating and monitoring project budgets, ensuring alignment with commercial objectives.
  • Implement robust cost data control measures, tracking expenditures and proposing corrective actions for data errors and or anomalies.
  • In Conjunction with QS & Commercial Manager: prepare commercial statements, maintain budgets to project scope, monthly project cost reports, work in progress & cashflow reports, project planned costs reports, weekly project labour actual hours & cost mapped to earned.
  • Monitor and adjust procurement reports mapped against cost heads to align to mapped BOQ.
  • Extract manhours from internal timesheet system, calculate missing hours and include in cost report.


Qualifications / Background

  • Proven track record (min 10 years) in Mechanical Commercial Engineering / Quantity Surveying with leading Mechanical contracting businesses.
  • Experience in Semi-Conductor projects is essential.
  • Qualification in Building Services Engineering and/or Mechanical Engineering. Formal qualification in Quantity Surveying is not essential.
  • Strong ability to work independent of engineers & project managers when required to commercialise mechanical designs.
  • Ability to understand the basis of the design and ability to "fill-in the blanks" when design is not fully complete. 
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical mindset, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills to convey complex findings effectively.
  • Ability to work autonomously and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Familiarity with building services terminology
  • Strong analytical and logical skills
  • Able to work accurately with figures
