Responsible to: Pharmacy Manager or designate
The Senior Pharmacist has the following roles and responsibilities:
- The supply and supervision of supply of drugs, pharmaceutical and other related items as may be required.
- Dispensary: routinely work in and supervise dispensary related activities.
- Ward Based Clinical Services: provide or be available to provide clinical pharmacy services in clinical areas to promote safe, effective and economical use of medicines. Clinical areas include but are not limited to: ICU, Emergency Department, Care of the Elderly, Mental Health, Medical, and Surgical.
- Medication Safety: Support and work with the Medication Safety Pharmacist. Further develop medication safety systems and routinely participate and contribute to medication safety initiatives.
- Medicines Information: provide comprehensive and high quality medicines information services to doctors, nurses and other health care professionals.
- Routinely conduct clinical audit and be available to support or carry out clinical research.
- Committees: Participate in multidisciplinary hospital committees where such exist at the discretion of the pharmacy manager.
- Clinical Policies and Guidelines: Further develop and maintain up to date clinical guidelines and services.
- Medicines Reconciliation: Routinely carry out medicines reconciliation and further expand and develop medicines reconciliation services.
- Provision of advice to patients on medicine related issues.
- To supervise other pharmacy staff and students as assigned.
- Deliver training and education to doctors, nurses and pharmacy staff.
- Continually promote professional development including training and mentoring of pharmacists, technicians and students.
- To participate in the staff rotation system and participate as a key member of the team.
- To perform other such duties appropriate to the office, as may be assigned by the Pharmacy Manager.
Rotate into Pharmacy cancer services on a routine and ad hoc basis to:
- In house training will be provided where required.
- Provide Clinical Pharmacist services primarily to haematology, oncology and leukaemia unit and to a lesser extent to other disciplines.
- Carry out and supervise aseptic compounding related activities.
- Report to the Chief II Manager of Pharmacy Cancer Services.
General and Personal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Must maintain throughout the hospital, an awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all hospital activities.
- Must demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the MUH.
- Participate in the pharmaceutical services as part of a professional, punctual and dedicated team.
- Help to create, promote and maintain open communications and health working relationships.
- Will maintain the principles of equity, accountability and quality of service in daily work.
- Agrees to liaise with the Pharmacy Manager on matters concerning departmental procedures and on matters concerning safety, security, complaints concerning the service and unusual occurrences or conditions relating to drugs, drug requests, usage and their security in the hospital.
- Appropriate training, subject to availability, will be offered to facilitate personal development within the post.

Requirements - Successful Candidate must:
- Be registered in the register of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland and/or so be entitled to be registered.
- Have three years experience working as a Hospital Pharmacist
The following are ideal but not required:
- Experience and knowledge of pharmacy cancer services including aseptic compounding.
- Experience and knowledge of dispensary services.
- Experience and knowledge in at least two of the clinical areas listed above under roles and responsibilities.
- Have a post graduate Masters in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent.
