Background

In 2023, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Strategic Science Investment Fund (MBIE SSIF) committed a $70M investment to support the establishment and development of a cutting-edge RNA platform in New Zealand.

The RNA Platform is a national consortium of collaborative scientists and state-of-the-art facilities dedicated to researching, developing, and manufacturing industry-grade RNA products. We are looking for a Pillar Lead to provide science leadership, direction, and coordination of one or more pillars of the Platform.

Position Purpose

The Pillar Lead will develop work programs for their pillar/s, manage budgets, and ensure alignment with Platform outcomes. They will engage with international and commercial stakeholders, advise on the direction of the Pillar, and maintain connections in their field. This role involves fostering collaboration between Platform Partners and growing relationships with research organizations, industry partners, and government agencies. This is a fixed-term position for 4 years.

Owing to the distinct maturity and nature of the work associated with each Pillar, we anticipate that the full-time equivalent (FTE) commitment required may vary for each Pillar and could fluctuate from year to year. Currently, each role is labelled with a note indicating that the FTE is negotiable. We expect a minimum time commitment of 0.1 FTE, but we are open to discussions with potential candidates.

Position Location

The Pillar Lead will be based within their substantive appointment organization but will also report to the Co-Directors of the RNA Platform.

Strategic Context

The RNA Technology Development Platform is a 7-year investment co-hosted by Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Auckland, with the vision to build national capability in RNA technologies. The Pillar Lead will play a crucial role in advancing capability, managing funds, and achieving Platform goals.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy Development and Implementation

  • Contribute to the Platform’s overarching vision and strategic direction.
  • Develop research priorities for the relevant Pillar.
  • Build a staffing and research profile consistent with the strategic aims of the Pillar.

Technical Leadership of Pillar Activities

  • Maintain relationships with international and commercial stakeholders.
  • Engage with the Commercial and IP Committee.
  • Assimilate input from various committees and stakeholders to ensure Pillar projects are viable, up-to-date, and relevant.
  • Ensure engagement with Māori relevant to the Pillar.

Development of New Zealand Capability

  • Develop capability across the Pillar, including among Māori and Pasifika peoples.
  • Ensure a pipeline of early career researchers.
  • Manage risks and potential barriers to development of capability.

Management of Pillar Activities

  • Develop a Pillar Work Plan for the Co-Directors.
  • Manage research activities funded through the work plan.
  • Ensure high-quality financial management of Pillar activities.
  • Ensure high-quality reporting of Pillar activities.
  • Identify and manage risks to successful operation of the Pillar.

The RNA Platform Pillar Lead will collaborate closely with the Co-Directors, research teams, research organizations, commercial partners, and research leaders as required.

  • International Connectivity: Appreciation of the global landscape in science and technology with established international connections and networks.
