Position Summary

The Centre for Veterinary Epidemiology and Risk Analysis (CVERA) is Ireland's resource centre for veterinary epidemiology, developing scientific information and conducting scientific support for national policy decision-making in animal health & welfare and public health. CVERA staff have very strong policy linkages with colleagues in the national Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and Animal Health Ireland (AHI). CVERA has also developed multiple national and international scientific collaborations in seeking to solve national and EU-level challenges. In broad terms, areas of research focus include regulatory diseases (including bovine tuberculosis, preparedness for and response to exotic animal disease threats), non-regulatory animal diseases (BVD, milk quality, Johne's disease, IBR) and other animal health & welfare and public health issues and related matters.

The Centre is located within the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine, the only veterinary school on the island of Ireland. University College Dublin is Ireland's largest university, with research and teaching strengths across a diversity of disciplines. The Centre is fully funded by DAFM.

The Centre is seeking to fill the position of Research Veterinary Epidemiologist.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage epidemiological research studies across the full project lifecycle, from project design through to scientific publication
  • Provision of specialist expertise to the design, planning, analysis and publication of epidemiological studies
  • Provision of general veterinary advice in support of projects led or managed by CVERA
  • Lead and contribute to international peer-reviewed scientific publications
  • Other duties as advised by the Centre Director

Fixed Salary: €81,800 per annum

Selection Criteria

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post. Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.

Mandatory

  • A primary veterinary degree
  • A PhD in (veterinary) epidemiology
  • Extensive experience in the successful leadership and management of research studies across the full project lifecycle, from project design through to high quality scientific publication
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, a broad range of epidemiological methods, both qualitative and quantitative, and of relevant software (including R)
  • Experience with large and complex datasets
  • A strategic, creative and critical thinker; a proven and positive team player, an ability to work independently, strong interpersonal skills with a willingness to contribute positively and collaboratively within a small dynamic research team
  • Excellent communications skills both written and verbal
  • Good organisational and time management skills, proven ability to establish priorities, to multi-task and to meet deadlines, commitment to accuracy and attention to detail, advanced computer skills
  • Able and willing to comply with relevant data protection legislation
  • Candidates must demonstrate an awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion agenda.

Desirable

  • Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Public Health (epidemiology) or equivalent
  • Experience working successfully at the science-policy interface, prior relevant experience in a similar role
  • Sound knowledge of current animal health & welfare and One Health challenges relevant to Ireland
  • Knowledge of Irish livestock farming
