The project:

- A full-time experienced senior sustainability manager to support a nationally significant infrastructure program
- Supports the establishment of a sustainability function within the program and will work cross-functionally and with contractors and consultants to help capture market-leading sustainable solutions that are innovative and remain efficient throughout the lifecycle.
- To assist in establishing sustainability, efficiency, and innovation performance metrics based on program objectives using relevant global benchmarks and leading practice while also providing support in overseeing the design and implementation of the performance measurement framework to enable the program to achieve or outperform those targets.
- The successful candidate will be part of the Mace Responsible Business global practice team, delivering client-facing consultancy services including advisory, management, and coordination of various climate change, sustainability, and social value-related activities on projects and programs. The role may also be required to support work winning and will proactively support Mace's wider corporate ambitions on sustainability to reduce client carbon emissions, generate value to society, and increase biodiversity net gain.

You'll be responsible for:

  • Ensure project teams and suppliers/subcontractors deliver on corporate targets and client requirements, aiming to innovate, exceed, and deliver positive sustainability outcomes beyond compliance.
  • Ensure sustainability reporting and compliance requirements, including environmental minimum requirements, and consents are met in the most business-efficient manner, by embedding data collection processes throughout project processes and activities.
  • Act as a focal point for environmental technical support/help desk and able to troubleshoot.
  • Champion and promote innovation/change in sustainability. Identify opportunities for improvement and support implementation as appropriate.
  • Engage colleagues, suppliers, and the client in environmental and sustainability issues through appropriate communication mechanisms. Devise, develop, and deliver relevant sustainability training to support achievement of project deliverables and upskill colleagues, clients, and supply chain partners.
  • Ensure sustainability is embedded in the supply chain by supporting the procurement process through appropriate review and challenge during tendering and post-tender activities.
  • Common purchasing and partnerships - drive business efficiency by working with internal stakeholders to develop standardized purchasing processes and partnerships.
  • Support the drive for the client partner to be regarded as an exemplar delivery partner in sustainability. Be a vocal champion of the environment and sustainability on the project.
  • Represent the client partner and the project at relevant internal and external meetings.
  • Support internal and external assurance processes to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with other HSEQ personnel to coordinate activities and programs to maximize business benefit and minimize impacts on delivery.
  • Carry out regular inspections of work programs. Proactively identify environmental non-conformance and close out using software tools provided. Ensure corrective actions taken address root causes to prevent recurrence.
  • Input to risk management processes.
  • Liaise with project teams to ensure adequate procedures are established within functions and are implemented.
  • Produce reports, meeting minutes, and presentation material as required.
  • Support corporate environmental and sustainability activities and initiatives such as knowledge sharing and volunteering.

You'll also have:

  • Proven years of construction industry experience, including years of experience embedding sustainability and efficiency into high-value metro-rail projects or projects of similar scale and complexity.
  • Degree educated in a relevant environmental or science subject.
  • Experience in project, contractor, stakeholder engagement, or delivering employment and skills requirements.
  • Experience in developing and/or implementing environmental management systems on projects.
  • Associate or higher-level member of IEMA or similar professional body.
  • Expert knowledge of all aspects of construction environmental management and sustainability.
  • Strong technical knowledge and experience in one or more relevant sustainability topics (Waste, carbon/energy, responsible sourcing, water, biodiversity).
  • Be able to translate technical topics into laypersons language and articulate the value of sustainability.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Solid administration and IT skills - advanced Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a flexible approach to different work environments
  • Ability to manage technical outputs to drive efficiency.
