Bloomfield Hospital is inviting applications for the position of Basic Clinical/Counselling Psychologist for a permanent full-time role.

About Bloomfield:

Bloomfield Hospital provides a spectrum of neuropsychiatric services to adults with a range of serious and enduring mental health needs such as Alzheimer`s, Parkinson`s and Huntington`s Diseases, as well as individuals with early onset dementias, schizophrenia and mood disorders. We are the only facility in Ireland that provides high level of specialised care for people with Huntington's disease. We also provide specialist palliative care to individuals with mental health needs. In Bloomfield Hospital there is a focus on creating a therapeutic environment by using recovery oriented clinical practices and therapeutic interventions which are evidence based to enable and support patients to achieve their highest level of functioning and quality of life. This care is delivered through a Multidisciplinary Team including colleagues in Psychiatry, Psychology, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language, Dietetics, Physiotherapy and General Practice. Bloomfield Hospital is a 123-bed in-patient mental health service, registered as an approved centre with the Mental Health Commission.

Reports to: Clinical Director

Responsibilities:

1. Professional and Clinical

Carry out Psychological assessments as necessary, with patients/residents attending the inpatient/day and outpatient services. Develop and provide individual, family and group therapeutic interventions/strategies to patients/residents as required. Carry a caseload and perform the duties required of a Basic Clinical/Counselling Psychologist as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. Report to the Clinical Director and liaise with the relevant Consultant/Psychiatrist on professional and administrative issues regarding his or her work as a member of the clinical teams. Carry out research, especially in the area of service evaluation, regarding patients/residents attending the service. Identify psychology needs in respect of the presenting patient population and to develop proposals for the Clinical Director as to how these needs could be met. Manage patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence-based, care planning approach. Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and to participate in teams/meetings/committees as appropriate, communicating and working in co-operation with other team members. Plan discharge or transfer of the patient/resident between services as appropriate. Maintain records in accordance with service and professional standards. Competent and up-to-date with regard to Clinical Governance and be familiar with conducting audits and analysing data. Ensure that the Centre is at all times in compliance with statutory regulations, guidelines. Ensure that the delivery of treatment and care is maintained at the highest evidence-based practice standard. Develop and promote good interdisciplinary relationships with the objective of enhancing and maintaining quality patient care. Assist in the implementation of practice developments throughout the centre and monitor their effectiveness. To be familiar with, be competent in and support the advancement and implementation of ICT developments within the centre. Maintain strict confidentiality with regard to all matters concerning patients/residents, staff and business of the Centre.

2. Administration

To be familiar and competent to carry out administrative duties as assigned. Competent to advise on all aspects of legislation pertaining to psychological practice and education. Investigate, document and take appropriate action regarding complaints in accordance with centre policy if required. Assist with the formulation of policies, protocols, guidelines and procedures which will ensure that the highest standard of patient-focused care is provided within available resources. Participate in the work of committees and task groups relating to both educational and clinical aspects of the service as required. To be familiar with and competent in Data Protection, GDPR and Freedom of Information. promote a culture that values diversity and respect in the workplace. Ensure that full and comprehensive incident reporting is carried out in a timely fashion and that recommendations are fully implemented.

3. Health and Safety

Observe, report, and take appropriate action on any matter that may be detrimental to staff and/or service user care or well-being/may be inhibiting the efficient provision of care. Assist in observing and ensuring implementation and adherence to established policies and procedures e.g. health and safety, infection control, storage and use of controlled drugs etc. Ensure completion of incident/near miss forms/clinical risk reporting. Adhere to department policies about the care and safety of any equipment supplied for the fulfillment of duty.

4. Educational and Development

Initiate, facilitate and take-part in relevant research and promote research awareness within the clinical service of the centre. Keep up-to-date with clinical literature, recent clinical research and new developments in clinical practice, management and education. Participate in training programmes and attend relevant seminars and conferences relating to psychology or as required by the Clinical Director / professional body.

Person Specification:

Qualifications:

A recognised third level degree or diploma (QQ1 level 8 equivalent) obtained with first or second class honours in which psychology was taken as a major subject and honours were obtained in that subject, and which is accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland. A recognised postgraduate professional qualification in Clinical or Counselling Psychology, or an equivalent qualification validated by the Department of Health.

Experience:

At least 1 year satisfactory post-graduate experience in the area of professional psychology. Applicants must demonstrate that they have acquired, in appropriate health settings (i.e. Adult Mental Health/Psychiatry of Later Life), at least 60 days or equivalent supervised clinical placements as part of the professional qualification, or at least 60 days or equivalent post-qualification supervised work experience as a psychologist in adult mental health. Possess the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and management ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office. Post-qualification experience working within adult mental health/psychiatry of later life. Experience working within a mental health rehabilitation setting/framework. Training in cognitive-behavioural therapy. Training/expertise in at least one other therapeutic modality (e.g. family therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, schema therapy, emotion-focused therapy, compassion-focused therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy). Have good knowledge and experience of health, safety and other statutory regulations affecting a healthcare organisation. Be able to illustrate a high level of verbal and non-verbal skills in order to effectively communicate with and relate to patients, visitors, colleagues, management team and board members. Experience working in a hospital setting.
