Investment Management Analyst

  • The position will encompass investment strategy advice for DB pension Schemes, portfolio construction work for a broad range of client types and strategy analysis within the Multi Asset area (DC, private wealth, and wealth management)
  • Mercer's Delegated Solutions Strategy team provides specialised investment strategy advice to pension schemes primarily in the areas of dynamic de-risking and portfolio construction.
  • The Strategy team is responsible for developing and implementing client specific investment strategies for all our clients within the Delegated Solutions (DS) business. This encompasses clients who avail of our Implemented Consulting and full-service Dynamic De-Risking suite of solutions and encompasses analysis for Irish clients, Europe ex-UK and further afield. This also includes investment strategy analysis and portfolio construction for Multi Asset funds across DC, private wealth, and wealth management in each of these markets.

What you can expect:

  • The successful DS Strategy Support Analyst will be part of a core strategy team and will be responsible for supporting the development of specific client investment growth and hedging strategies and de-risking roadmaps based on the dynamic de-risking proposition.
  • You will be involved in the technical analysis part of the process and the regular review and assessment of portfolios for a wide range of client types in both Ireland and beyond.
  • You will assist the multi asset team to complete investment strategy analysis and determine strategic asset allocations for DC, private wealth, and wealth management funds in Ireland, UK, Europe and Middle East allowing for different investment objectives and constraints faced by each.
  • This is a growing area and the expectation is that the successful candidate will also be part of the work to support development of best practice and modelling techniques to enhance the proposition. This will involve working with Mercer colleagues in DS, Investment Management, the Strategic Solutions Group, Investment Consulting and the actuarial practice within the Wealth business.

We will rely on you to:

Initial set up of new DS clients

  • Working with scheme actuaries to gather cash flow data, Funding Standard related information / software and other scheme information to support the development of the investment strategy and to ensure the calculation methodology is robust for specific clients
  • Calculation of funding level triggers for de-risking plan
  • Key involvement in completing investment strategy reviews – reflecting de-risking requirements and other drivers

Ongoing client maintenance and operations

  • Day to day financial operations for DS dynamic de-risking clients – reviewing changes in asset and liability values and any associated triggers and trading accordingly
  • Consideration of actuarial factors that might invalidate the de-risking journey plan
  • Annual update to allow for client specific cashflows and actual experience

General:

  • Supporting consultants in drafting client presentations, meeting agendas/minutes and any other required meeting materials
  • Working with the DS Strategy team in the UK to bring out the best ideas and ensuring a consistent and logical approach
  • Supporting consultants in answering ad-hoc client and fund related queries (performance, transaction, valuation, fund info, fact sheets)
  • Communicating to consultants and clients to keep them abreast of developments such as trigger breaches and executed trades, strategic asset allocation updates, market and fund performance updates, operational information/updates

What you need to have:

  • Ideally educated to degree level or equivalent - Business, Accounting, Economics, Actuarial or similar discipline
  • Solid interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy skills
  • Strong project management skills with ability to manage across multiple tasks and to tight deadlines
  • Naturally curious and a problem-solver; with a-get-involved attitude
  • Flexibility to support the team and clients as needed
  • Proficient MS Excel, PowerPoint and Word

What makes you stand out:

  • Working towards completion of Actuarial and/or CFA professional exams
  • Experience within the financial services industry (consulting, pensions, fund management, wealth management, investments or asset management)
  • Understanding of pension scheme liabilities and actuarial considerations
  • Working knowledge of Irish Pension Legislation including the Funding Standard & Funding Proposal requirements
  • Understanding and experience of portfolio construction / asset allocation techniques and methodologies
  • Investment/asset management background, with experience of dealing with equity derivatives and/or duration matched fixed income strategies
  • Risk management experience, including identification, modelling, managing, and ongoing monitoring
  • Technical modelling skills, including understanding of the processes involved.
