Registrar and Clinical Fellowship in Regional Specialist Memory Clinic, Mercy University Hospital This role relates to a registrar post and structured fellowship in cognitive disorders in an Irish Regional Specialist Memory Clinic.
The successful candidate will be appointed as a clinical fellow and given the option of undertaking a structured taught Masters (MSc) in Dementia as part of this role with fees included starting September 2025.
The role will involve participating in the assessment and management of persons with symptoms suggestive of young onset dementia and cognitive impairment as well as older people with atypical and complex presentations attending a large regional centre for cognitive assessment (memory clinic).
The post will be based in an off-site location at Mercy University Hospital Cork and the candidate will cover the Regional Specialist Memory Clinic between working hours Monday to Friday.
This is a new service and the job description may change according to service needs as the service develops.
Open to those with experience in Geriatric Medicine, Neurology and Psychiatry of Old Age (Geriatric Psychiatry).
The purpose of the post is as follows: Be part of a broad multidisciplinary team providing neurocognitive assessment, diagnosis and management of persons presenting with cognitive impairment including those at a young age.
Provide a biomarker-based diagnosis of dementia in a timely manner including running a lumber puncture clinic.
Support primary care (General Practice) to manage patients once a diagnosis is made.
Support research being conducted within the unit including participating in clinical drug trials and grant applications to further research.
Fulfil and return key performance indicators to the National Dementia Office.
Care for patients in the community, as per Slintecare, improving patient outcomes.
Create a truly integrated memory service that improves care for patients with neurocognitive disorders.
Eligibility Criteria, Qualifications and Experience: At minimum applicants are expected to have completed Basic Specialty Training in General Medicine.
Have clinical experience in a specialty aligned to neurocognitive disorders i.e., Neurology/Geriatric Medicine.
Have or be willing to undertake a Masters degree aligned with the study of neurocognitive disorders.
Possession of MRCP/MRCPI.
Core requirements for this post include: a demonstrable commitment to medicine, good decision making, a broad clinical knowledge base and appropriate clinical skills including proficiency with lumber puncture, awareness of patient safety and risk management issues and the ability to work efficiently as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Must hold General Registration or Trainee Specialist Division Registration with the Irish Medical Council All applications must include the names, telephone numbers and email addresses of three Referees.
