Permanent . A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.

Basic Function

To provide technical support for the running of all educational programmes operated by College of Amenity Horticulture. The successful candidate will have excellent skills in plant knowledge and a good working knowledge of plant propagation techniques to demonstrate to students from certificate up to degree level.

Background

The College in the Botanic Gardens has 19 staff in total and delivers full time and part time Horticultural programmes across the academic year to over 200 students. The College is located in the beautiful surroundings that is the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin. Teagasc staff work in conjunction with the campus in Ashtown for the delivery of students' skills and practical's across all programmes.

Job Objectives

  • To prepare and conduct skills training and assessment in line with approved curriculum across all of the College education programmes
  • To engage, in particular, with the new Horticulture Apprenticeship training programme in its delivery and assessment and further promote and develop this programme.
  • To deliver Teagasc Horticulture modules at Level 5, 6 and 7 as per QQI/SETU guidelines.
  • To manage the health and safety of students and support implementation of health and safety policy in the horticultural unit.
  • To undertake practical skills training, assessment and results feedback to students as per QQI/SETU guidelines.
  • To assist in the supervision of students on work experience either on Teagasc site or placement host.
  • To co-ordinate the operation and running of the College horticultural enterprise and grounds in either Ashtown or Botanics.
  • To record the results pertaining to students assessments on Teagasc Quercus.
  • To assist in the organisation and running of College promotion events and activities.
  • To participate in the review of Teagasc educational programmes.
  • To oversee the purchase and use of sundry horticultural inputs.
  • Health & Safety Co-ordinator Duties or such other Health & Safety Duties as may be assigned from time to time.
  • To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.
  • To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.
  • Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time

Skills Requirement

Qualifications

  • A Level 6 qualification, (as recognised on the National Framework of Qualifications or equivalent), in horticulture or a related discipline.
  • 1 years' work experience in a relevant horticultural area.
  • A Level 7 qualification in horticulture would be a distinct advantage.
  • 2-3 years' work experience in the horticultural education sector.

  • As the ability to problem solve and demonstrates a high level of attention to detail
  • Demonstrates a positive approach to new challenges and dissemination of new tasks.
  • Commitment to teamwork and collaborating with colleagues as per our Teagasc Together ethos

Other

As this role will involve driving vehicles, candidates must satisfy and continue to satisfy during employment with Teagasc, legal requirements to drive a car unaccompanied on Irish public roads.
