Purpose of the Role

The Therapy Assistant will support the delivery of quality patient care and related duties for Critical Care patients at TUH under the supervision of qualified therapists.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist qualified therapists in providing Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Nutrition and Dietetic services to critical care patients.
  • Contribute to patient assessments and treatments, supervise therapeutic activities, and prepare materials for therapy sessions.
  • Perform departmental tasks such as preparing materials, collating data, and managing equipment orders.
  • Support clinical service delivery through clerical and household tasks, report to supervising therapists, and ultimately be accountable to the Head of Discipline.
Clinical Duties
  • Assist in patient assessments and interventions, prepare patients and environments, carry out interventions, and organize therapeutic activities.
  • Use therapy equipment as directed, monitor patient responses, and involve patients actively in their treatment.
General Duties
  • Understand the responsibilities within the therapy team, communicate effectively with patients and healthcare professionals, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Document interventions, maintain treatment areas, manage equipment and supplies, and perform administrative tasks.
Communication
  • Motivate patients, communicate confidently within multidisciplinary teams, and build therapeutic rapport respecting patients' autonomy and cultural backgrounds.
Accountability and Safety
  • Engage in continuous professional development, adhere to hospital policies, and observe health and safety regulations.
  • Report incidents and support sustainable practices within the hospital.

Qualifications & Experience

Must:

  • Achieved at least Grade D3 in five Leaving Certificate subjects or equivalent.
  • Passed relevant QQI qualifications or demonstrated equivalent skills.
  • Recent knowledge and patient-facing experience in an acute hospital setting.
  • Proficiency in IT systems and fluent English communication skills.

Desirable:

  • Health or social care qualification (e.g., QQI Level 5).
  • At least 1 year of recent experience in an acute hospital environment, preferably in critical care.
  • Experience with electronic patient records and working across disciplines.
Reward & Recognition
  • Salary in accordance with the Department of Health scales, grade code 6504.
  • Full-time, permanent, pensionable position with annual leave of 23 days.
  • Working hours are 39 per week, with schedule flexibility between 8 am to 8 pm, across 7 days.
