Geographic Information Systems Technician

The Role

These roles require GIS technicians to carry out network digitising and GIS, mapping and data management tasks. You will have strong spatial analytical and problem-solving skills and some experience of data acquisition and management, strong communication skills and a team-oriented approach.

This role is initially for 12 months with the potential to extend or become permanent. If you are looking for a position to develop a GIS career in the environment, transport or utilities this role is a great opportunity to gain important experience working for one of our key clients.

What you will do
  • Digitising and mapping of linear network, including all attributes.
  • Reviewing the accuracy of current GIS maps and identify gaps
  • Assisting in data management analysis and ensuring its accuracy and consistency through data quality checks.
  • Assisting and liaising with client on data capture mechanisms and where applicable digitising if necessary.
  • Collaborating with others to deliver GIS projects. Adhering to timelines and ensuring successful implementation of all tasks.
  • Identifying and solving GIS-related issues and developing innovative solutions.
  • Review and improve GIS reporting outputs.
  • Working with various departments and stakeholders to meet their needs.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Map Creation: Assisting with the Preparation and creation of maps and charts, tailored to an audience and used to effectively communicate key information.
  • Analysis and Visualization: Supporting spatial analysis and creating maps and reports to communicate insights, meeting the requirements of specific audiences.
  • Performing updates to existing Arc GIS Online applications such as Web Application Builders, Arc GIS Dashboards and Map Viewers as required.
  • Support the maintenance of custom applications that might include data updates as well custom configuration updates.
  • Utilising ESRI applications such as Survey 123 to help clients create more efficient data capture mechanisms.
  • Might include performing database updates to clients' datasets within SDE databases and within SQL databases and using workflows such as FME and SQL Stored Procedures.
You will have
  • Knowledge of spatial data management and analysis processes is essential
  • Good GIS software proficiency: Experience with the Esri ArcGIS Enterprise / AGOL platforms or experience with Open Source GIS technologies (e.g. QGIS / Map Server / GeoServer / OpenLayer etc.), with an awareness of both.
  • Experience of Esri ArcGIS Suite (Enterprise, Portal, AGOL, Desktop/Pro, Mobile apps), and/or
  • Open Source GIS (QGIS, OpenLayers, MapServer/GeoServer/other)
  • An awareness of the following is an advantage:
  • Python
  • MS SQL
  • FME
  • Data visualisation tools (e.g. PowerBI / Tableau)
