RCSI and dentistry: RCSI has a strong heritage in dental education and training. As the second oldest dental school in Europe, it delivered an undergraduate dentistry programme between 1878 and 1977 (LDS, RCSI). The Faculty of Dentistry RCSI was founded in 1963. It provides education, accreditation of programmes and quality assurance through examination of postgraduate dental professionals. The faculty is an international centre of excellence for assessment/examination in postgraduate dentistry, attracting candidates from over 40 countries. RCSI is now re-starting its undergraduate dentistry training programme, with the establishment of the School of Dentistry in 2024. The School of Dentistry sits alongside seven other established Schools in RCSI in producing work ready graduates trained to work, thrive and lead in the environment in which they will practise contributing to benefit healthcare at a national and international level. The School of Dentistry is currently rolling out a community based undergraduate dental education programme. Commencing September 2025, RCSI will offer a new undergraduate NFQ Level 8 Dentistry programme leading to the award of a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS Hons.). Through a community- based approach to dental education, our graduates will be ready to work in a primary care environment where they will practice. This programme will be based in a new Dental Education Facility in Sandyford, Dublin. Additional Dental Education Facilities will be developed over time across Dublin. The role at a glance The RCSI School of Dentistry is expanding the academic team. It is now recruiting a Professor of Oral Surgery and Dental Anatomy, with a significant background and track record in Oral Surgery, and a strong record on delivering the teaching of Anatomy/Clinical Anatomy relevant to Dentistry, Dental Anatomy, Embryology and Histology. Key Duties of the roles Include: The post holder will offer leadership and guidance, within their areas of specialisation. They will actively engage in all dimensions of pedagogy and research to help launch the BDS Programme, collaborating closely with other academic staff and under the direction of Professor Albert Leung, the Head of School. As the RCSI School of Dentistry prepares to welcome the first cohort of BDS students in September 2025, the post holder will demonstrate academic leadership, vision and strategy, contributing to the education, assessment, clinical teaching, delivery of clinical services, research activities and service development of the programme. In the fullness of time, it is also anticipated that: During the Implementation Phase of the BDS Programme: The postholder will provide leadership, input and guidance to academic colleagues working on curriculum development, simulation and practice development strategies. RCSI has adopted a community-based curriculum for the BDS Programme, as approved by the National University of Ireland (NUI), and endorsed to commence by the Dental Council in Ireland. The postholder will play a leadership role in preparation for and delivery of teaching materials and clinical teaching, where applicable, in both the Simulated Dental Learning Environment (SDLE) and in the clinical environment, in line with the delivery of clinical teaching and some clinical patient treatment in a community environment. The postholder will provide vision, leadership collaborative input to the team in development and adaption of the curriculum in preparation for the 2025 intake. The postholder will contribute to the implementation and setting up of Dental Education Facilities (DEFs) - a key facility for the delivery of community-based dentistry model, and positive learning experiences for students. Teaching & Research: The postholder will Be an integral part of the teaching faculty resource team who will be responsible for delivering and teaching the new undergraduate dentistry programme, taking ownership and participate in developing EBL (Evidence-Based Learning) and other teaching and learning strategies. Provide guidance and leadership in collaboration with academic colleagues in delivery of an assessment framework and execution of same. Integrate innovative teaching methods, technology, and research findings into the curriculum to enhance students' learning experience, in accordance with the School of Dentistry teaching and assessment strategies. Where applicable, sustain an independent and highly productive research profile aligned with established priority areas of research within the school and across RCSI. Support and Collaboration: The postholder will Provide effective leadership and mentorship to School staff. Develop and enhance relationships with external partners and governing bodies such as the Dental Council of Ireland, Department of Health, HSE, etc. Represent the School and RCSI on such committees and external bodies as may be appropriate. Forging strong links and collaborations with other education institutions and the dental sector. Always represent the best interests of the School of Dentistry and RCSI. Stay current with advancements in dentistry, and related fields through continuing professional development activities. Participate in national and international conferences to share research insights, collaborate with peers, and stay abreast of the latest developments in the field. The Ideal Candidate Has a strong track record of academic achievements, holding a senior academic position, with an extensive record in academic leadership in the delivery of dental education and clinical activities (teaching, delivery of patient care, clinical supervision and management) in the respective disciplines. Has demonstrated expertise and extensive experience over a sustainable period of time in the practice of Oral Surgery. Has demonstrated expertise and extensive experience over a sustained period of time in the teaching and examining of Oral Surgery (undergraduate and/or postgraduate). Has demonstrated expertise and experience in delivering Clinical Anatomy relevant to Dentistry, Dental Anatomy, Embryology and Histology. Is registered as a Specialist in Oral Surgery with the Dental Council in Ireland or holds a qualification recognised by the Dental Council in Ireland for registration as a dentist in Ireland and be eligible to be registered as a Specialist in Oral Surgery. Holds an appropriate Surgical Fellowship with RCSI or one of the affiliated surgical colleges is essential. Is a recognised international expert in the subject. Has a strong national/international profile in teaching, examining and research in the subject. Is a team player with excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills. Is a problem solver, able to work under pressure, think outside the box, and be innovative. Has experience in the development of new educational programme / significant programme reform.
