Title: Professor of Anatomy & Head of the Department of Anatomy & Regenerative Medicine Department: Department of Anatomy & Regenerative Medicine Reporting to: RCSI Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs (DVCAA) Contract Type: Full time, Permanent Location: RCSI, 123 St Stephen's Green, Dublin 2 This critical role of Professor and Head of the Department of Anatomy & Regenerative Medicine will drive the ongoing innovation and delivery of the University teaching programme, as well as teaching in the surgical College and its postgraduate faculties. It also provides an innovative platform for excellence in research in a range of related areas. There are three core components of the post: Leadership: As Head of the Department of Anatomy & Regenerative Medicine: The successful candidate will: Lead and collaborate on the development and implementation of the Department's vision and strategy, aligned with the RCSI strategy. Manage the efficient administration of Department's strategy and plan. Provide effective leadership to Department staff - inspire, motivate, develop and mentor the existing team throughout their career stages. Build on and foster a collaborative team culture. Lead a diverse team of academic, administrative and technical professionals Engage with and collaborate with other Departments in RCSI with regard to the planning and execution of education and research projects. Drive the services and standards of the Department as a whole and ensure it is fully resourced with efficient processes and capable, suitably qualified and motivated staff members. Actively adapt plans to keep pace with RCSI's and students' emerging needs and priorities, and research opportunities. Work collaboratively with RCSI Department colleagues and across Departments Represent the School and RCSI on such committees and external bodies as may be appropriate including the University's Academic Council. The Anatomical Gifts Programme is a unique and valued responsibility of the role, as part of the Department of Anatomy within RCSI. The Department will hold the license for Anatomical Examination, attend an Anatomical Committee dealing with the management of the Dublin Medical Schools' Plot at Glasnevin Cemetery, ensure that RCSI complies with current legislation and guidelines and report annually to the Irish Medical Council and the University. Innovative Teaching: The Department of Anatomy & Regenerative Medicine plays a central role in the RCSI teaching programme. The Department teaches in the School of Medicine across RCSI teaching sites in Dublin and Bahrain, as well as delivering courses in the Schools of Pharmacy & Biomolecular Sciences, Physiotherapy and postgraduate faculties in Dublin. The new post holder will: Lead and manage anatomy curriculum development and teaching of undergraduate students, as well as contribute to the development of anatomy modules for graduate students in Physician Associate Studies and Graduate Entry Medicine, and for professional postgraduate programmes in anatomy for trainee surgeons, radiologists and other health professionals. Develop the ample opportunity to further develop the Department's and RCSI's innovative teaching modalities including Simulation and to explore new emerging teaching technologies including Virtual Reality and AR. Ensure the Department continues to actively contribute to the accreditation and delivery of existing programmes and the accreditation of any new programmes Ground-breaking Research: The Department of Anatomy & Regenerative Medicine has an international reputation and expertise in basic and translational research in anatomy and related topics including the development of novel medical devices. Supporting these research programs is a key part of the role. The appointee will: Attract and manage translational research grants, and develop international and/or industry collaboration, to further enhance the research reputation of the University, the Department and the Irish Anatomy community. Ensure the departmental research strategy aligns with that of the RCSI and will support new appointments aligned with enhancing the research reputation of the Department and University. GENERAL ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITIES: Lead a Department of over 80 people, comprising 13 full-time and 14 part-time academic staff, two administrators, four technical staff and over 50 researchers Participate in the administration and delivery of current teaching programmes, teaching modalities and assessment in anatomy and biology for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students and trainees Secure funding so as to sustain a research group of postgraduate students and other research staff, with resultant publications in journals of high quality impact Foster industry-academia interactions and commercialization of research findings Contribute to the development and introduction of new teaching programmes, innovative teaching modalities and modes of assessment Liaise with colleagues across RCSI international campuses in the facilitation of research and teaching activities Be responsible for ensuring that the RCSI Anatomical Examination and Anatomical Gifts Programme fully complies with Irish legislation, the Irish Medical Council and operates to the highest standards Oversee quality assurance regarding donor consent, premises, facilities, equipment, record keeping, traceability and sensitive disposal of remains Supervise undergraduate students and postgraduate students at Masters, MD and PhD levels Participate in the development of RCSI's teaching and learning strategy including the effective use of technology-enhanced learning Contribute to quality assurance/quality improvement and accreditation of existing modules Represent the best interests of the Department and RCSI at all times to enhance RCSI's reputation in the field and build collaborations Undergo programmes of training and development as may be required Undertake overseas assignments as may be required from time to time Perform such other related duties as may be required ACADEMIC COMPETENCIES TO HIGHLIGHT: Strong teaching interest and skill set, as evidenced by experience of, a proven track record in, and enthusiasm for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment in Anatomy and/or related areas. Competitive research record, on an international level, as evidenced by grant application success, and peer reviewed publications in journals of high quality impact and grant support in areas of emerging and strategic relevance to RCSI PERSONAL AND LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES WITH THIS ROLE: The ability to develop strategy and plans and engage collaboratively with other stakeholders A strong ability to work in a highly collaborative and inclusive manner to achieve shared objectives and desired outcomes Demonstrates role model behaviours in terms of strong student focus Ability to effectively motivate, manage and mentor a diverse team towards achieving work objectives and career goals Demonstrate evidence of effective planning and organising skills towards achieving plans, deadlines, and efficient resource management Experience of effective interaction with accreditation agencies The ability to actively engage with and further develop the capabilities and cohesion of team members within the Department and across RCSI Demonstrate strong communication skills especially with regard to presentation skills and delivering complex information in understandable terms to healthcare professionals and the public Demonstrate an ability to influence and manage complex relationships and foster harmonious collaborations at all levels. Experience and dedicated interest in enhancing stimulating and engaging undergraduate and postgraduate education programs An interest in and experience in new and future technologies in teaching Anatomy and Biology including Simulation, Virtual Reality and AR.
