Internal/External Competition Ref. No: 2025/45 Staff Grade Phlebotomist Permanent Full Time & Part Time This position within the Pathology Department will report to theLaboratory Manager on Related Clinical Matters Essential Qualifications Eligible applicants will be those who on the closing date for the competition: Possess an accredited relevant qualification at Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) Level 6 or higher. Or Possess the Certificate in Phlebotomy from DCU/National Ambulance Training School or equivalent Phlebotomy qualification. Or Are registered, or are eligible for registration, in the general division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (Bord Altranais agus Cnimhseachais na hireann). Or Be currently employed as a Phlebotomist with a minimum of two years experience in an acute Hospital (general or Specialist). Details of Service Correct identification of the patient prior to sample collection Preparation of patients prior to phlebotomy. Collection of the appropriate amount of blood by venepuncture or dermal puncture for the specified tests Selection of appropriate specimen containers for the specified tests Correct labelling of all specimens with the required information Appropriate transportation of specimens back to the laboratory in a timely manner Effective interaction with patients to the appropriate laboratory departments Performance of computer operations and record keeping pertaining to phlebotomy Observation of all safety regulation Attendance at continuing education programmes Monitoring of patients pre and post phlebotomy to ensure patients are referred to midwifery staff in the vent of fainting or other known complication associated with phlebotomy. Reporting Relationship Reports to the Senior Phlebotomist at the Rotunda Hospital Principal Duties and Responsibilities To be professionally responsible for all aspects of the post-holders own work. To be responsible for obtaining blood samples with skill and dexterity. To be responsible for the correct labelling of blood bottles while ensuring that the correct volume of blood is inserted as per the Laboratory guidelines. To facilitate and co-ordinate a timely and planned phlebotomy service. To ensure that all reasonable precautions and safeguards are in place to provide a safe place of work for all persons working in the Phlebotomy department in accordance with the current Health and Safety at Work Legislation. To have up to date current knowledge and adhere to the principles set down by the Infection Control Manual. To keep abreast in understanding and knowledge of all new developments which are applicable to the post holders work. To participate in training staff as required. To observe at all times the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or hospital information. To participate in any research studies as required. To perform such other duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned from time to time. Comply with relevant procedures, methods and qualitystandards as documented in the quality manual Ref.
