The School of Mechanical Electrical and Process Engineering comprises of: Centre of Craft Studies Dept of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Dept of Mechanical Biomedical and Manufacturing Engineering Dept of Process Energy and Transport Engineering It offers a comprehensive range of full-time and part-time undergraduate programmes and supports an active research community. The school has circa 2000 WTE students and 180 staff. Programmes are supported by industry-standard workshops, computer laboratories, research laboratories and other specialist facilities. A team of technical staff within the school manage and maintain these facilities and liaise with academic staff and students to provide a supportive learning environment. This Technical Officer position will be part of this team contributing as required to activities and developments across the school. The position is based primarily in Bishopstown and the appointee will report to the Head of School. The principal duties and responsibilities specific to this position are as follows: Provide IT support to staff and students across a variety of technologies including engineering/automation laboratories/workshops and associated network systems. Provide support for engineering student activities including the design, creation and testing of prototype products/systems. Collaborate with academic staff to devise and deliver authentic laboratory practicals and projects for students making the best use of available resources and identifying/specifying additional resource requirements where necessary. Work as part of a team to resolve issues and to develop projects that will enhance student learning. Use own initiative to research technical solutions in specific applications. Participate in the evaluation of new equipment/software. The potential candidate should have: Self-motivation and an ability to thrive in a progressive 3rd level teaching environment, along with the flexibility to adapt to new technologies. Strong people skills and an interest in supporting staff and student-led developments. Knowledge of a wide range of emerging technologies and interested in adopting emerging technologies. Professional experience in an engineering/IT environment. Ability to discover, analyse, verify and implement solutions to meet user requirements. A strong level of technical aptitude and problem-solving skills. Qualification Requirements for the position Essential A Level 8 degree (2nd Class or higher) from a recognised degree awarding authority in the area of Engineering, Computer Science, Automation or cognate technical discipline. AND Not less than three years relevant post-qualification experience. Desirable IT skills to support staff and students across technologies such as Intune, FLEXlm PC support skills to maintain and support computer-based laboratories (both on-campus and with remote online access) including operating systems, software deployment, networking and interfacing with peripherals. Troubleshooting skills to design and evaluate prototypes, develop/maintain networked system solutions and teaching/research laboratories. Knowledge of emerging technologies including cloud, enterprise architecture, IoT, Industry 4.0, PLC, SCADA, electrical substation automation systems, industrial networks and security and BIM. Team-working and the ability to manage/support projects and equipment installation, maintenance and upgrading.
