Responsibilities

The post of CNMII has a pivotal role in service planning, co-ordinating, and managing activity and resources within the theatre area. The CNMII will co-ordinate and lead in the implementation and provision of quality care.

- Manage patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence based, care planning approach

- Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership

- Be responsible for the co-ordination, assessment, planning, delivery and review of service user care by all staff in designated area

- Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to service users within the guidelines laid out by NMBI (Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland)

- Participate in teams / meetings / committees as appropriate, communicating and working in co-operation with other team members

- Facilitate co-ordination, co-operation and liaison across healthcare teams

- Collaborate with service users, family, carers and other staff in treatment / care

- Assess, Plan, Implement and evaluate nursing care by personal involvement and supervising the activities of other qualified nurses

- Ensure that the care delivered by the team is based on standards formulated on evidence based practice and agreed through hospital policy

- Regularly evaluate and monitor patient care using the hospital's quality systems

- Develop and promote good relationships with patients and carers

- Work as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team promoting good teamwork and excellent patient care

- Evaluate and further develop the philosophy, objectives and goals of the department

- Ensure all staff are familiar with the use and care of equipment and that equipment is maintained in good working condition

- Ensure strict confidentiality of information regarding patients/residents

Managerial responsibilities

The CNM2 will provide the necessary supervision, co-ordination and deployment of nursing and support staff to ensure the optimum delivery of care in the designated area through allocating work fairly and competently.

- Manage communication at departmental level and facilitate team building

- Provide staff leadership and motivation conducive to good working relations and performance

- Manage all resources efficiently and effectively

- Lead on practice development within the clinical area

- Lead and implement change

- Promote, facilitate and participate in the development of nursing policies and procedures, monitor and lead on proactive improvement

- Contribute to the formulation, development and implementation of policies and procedures at area and hospital level

- Support the CNM3 and deputise in their absence when required

- Maintain clinical and administrative records and reporting arrangements

- Follow uniform policy reference

General

- From time to time there may be a requirement to work in other areas of the hospital as requested by line management

- Staff must provide satisfactory documentary evidence of training and experience claimed

- Respect the organisational values of the Hospital

Quality & Safety – SafeCulture

- Quality and safety are embedded in daily work. Actively participate in planning, monitoring, analysing and improving quality programmes

- Participate in development of performance indicators with department manager

- Initiate, participate in and evaluate audits according to JCI, hospital policy and Lean requirements

Health & Safety

- Take reasonable care of own safety, health and welfare and that of others

- Co-operate with safety policies and report hazards

- Attend annual Fire Health & Safety education sessions

Information Governance

Information concerning patients and staff is confidential and must be handled in accordance with policy. Records must be kept secure and not left where unauthorised persons can access them.

Qualifications & Experience

Qualifications:

- Be registered in the General Division of the live Register of Nurses kept by NMBI

- It is desirable to have completed a recognised post-registration course in Peri-Operative Care

Experience:

- At least two years’ experience in a management position in theatres is desirable

- Desirable to have completed a recognised post-registration course in Peri-Operative Care

Job Specific Competencies and Knowledge:

- Have completed a Management Course or commit to undertake same

- Display evidence of continuing professional development

- Demonstrate awareness of HR policies and procedures

- Working knowledge of Microsoft packages is essential

- Experience in change management

- Time management skills

- Able to act quickly to address urgent matters
