Background Surgical training in Ireland enjoys a global reputation based on a proud tradition of producing generations of leaders in surgery around the world. RCSI has continued to nurture and develop future surgical leaders through our comprehensive surgical training pathway, academic and Master's programs, and by supporting surgeons in practice with Continuing Professional Development. Our facilities include the National Surgical and Clinical Skills Training Centre at 26 York Street, which offers state-of-the-art clinical training suites, task training rooms, a flexible wet lab, and simulation space equipped with sophisticated audio-visual technology. The building also includes a 540-seat auditorium, a library spanning three floors, a sports hall, and a fitness suite. Objective of this Post The principal objective of the post is to contribute to the development, organisation, and delivery of curriculum, teaching, and assessment in Surgery and Emergency Medicine across all our postgraduate training and academic programs. The successful candidate will play a key role in both the technical and non-technical skills training offered at RCSI, with a focus on the development and use of simulation technology to support learning. RCSI is seeking an individual with experience in the development and delivery of skills-based education in healthcare. The successful candidate should be enthusiastic about teaching, innovative in their approach, and committed to delivering excellence in a multicultural academic environment. They will also be involved in the planning and organisation of teaching days and training events. Training and professional development support will be provided to the successful candidate. Specific responsibilities include: Facilitate delivery of teaching across varied postgraduate programs in Surgery and Emergency Medicine, including technical and non-technical skills training. Plan, organise, and lead teaching days and simulation training sessions, ensuring smooth coordination of all aspects, from curriculum design to participant feedback. Liaise with clinical consultants in various specialties in the development and delivery of new specialty-specific programmes through the use of simulation, in conjunction with the Training Programme Directors and Assigned Education Supervisors. Provide curriculum development support to multiple programs within the Department of Surgical Affairs in line with best practices. Support the recruitment and development of adjunct faculty for curriculum delivery and onboarding to Surgical Affairs. Support the design and implementation of a comprehensive system of formative and summative assessments for learners across all our postgraduate Surgery and Emergency Medicine education programmes. Assist in the delivery of postgraduate examinations and skills assessments. Research and develop simulation solutions to enhance surgical skills learning, use of new equipment, and hybrid simulation for technical and non-technical skills courses. Interest in research and academic publishing is desirable. Successful candidates will be supported in developing and pursuing their own research projects if interested. However, if not, involvement in data collection and research support is also welcomed to contribute to broader research efforts in the department. Person Specification Essential: PhD degree or equivalent in healthcare, health sciences, education, or simulation. Experience in teaching particularly in a clinical or simulation setting. Enthusiasm for teaching and the ability to engage learners in both technical and non- technical skills. Strong organisational skills to manage the coordination of teaching days and events. Innovative approach to teaching, with experience or interest in using simulation technology in education. Possess excellent computer, presentation, verbal, and written communication skills. Demonstrated motivation and ability to inspire others towards achieving excellent results. Strong commitment to quality improvement and personal professional development. Be a proactive self-starter with the ability to work independently and take initiative to complete tasks.
