Specialist Medical Scientist in Microbiology with a particular interest in Surveillance.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities

Specialist Medical Scientist in Microbiology with responsibility for Surveillance data in Microbiology, Serology and Virology.
Deputise for the Chief Medical Scientist during periods of absence.
To ensure that systems and processes are in place to provide accurate timely information required by all the stakeholders within the hospital and among the partner agencies.
Working with DOVE for the surveillance of Serology data and the completion quarterly reports
The extraction of antimicrobial resistance data (e.g. EARSS) from laboratory information systems, and its categorisation into hospital-acquired, healthcare-associated, and community-acquired.
Collating and disseminating of data on antimicrobial resistance and other relevant data to laboratory managers, hospital senior management and the infection control committee.
Aiding in laboratory developments to improve the surveillance of antimicrobial resistance.
Developing and maintaining databases that will facilitate the surveillance of Staphylococcus aureus, C. difficile, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, and other organisms, as and when appropriate.
Developing and maintaining databases that will facilitate the surveillance of resistant organisms isolated from the on-going screening program in the NICU.
To contribute to the early recognition and management of outbreaks of infection or other unexpected infection related events in the Hospital and associated community services.
Participation in local and national initiatives such as the surveillance of Healthcare associated infections.
Assisting in the notification of diseases to public health departments using CIDR and non-CIDR methodologies.
Facilitating the extraction of data to fulfil Freedom of Information requests and requests from the patients and members of the public.
Participation in laboratory, departmental, hospital and other committees, where surveillance is a key component.
Contributing to relevant education and learning initiatives in hospitals and the community.
Participating in molecular research and development projects that have relevance locally and nationally.
Participating in continuing professional development and education where appropriate.
Reporting notifiable organisms both locally and nationally when and where required as set out by the Chief Medical Scientist/ Consultant Microbiologist.

Interpersonal Skills

The successful candidate should possess good interpersonal skills and an awareness/sensitivity towards patient and users’ needs and perform duties in a manner, which is conducive to harmonious team-based intra and inter-departmental relationships.
Good IT skills.

Performance Planning Development System (PPDS)

Achievement of laboratory and personnel objectives is facilitated by PPDS. The Rotunda Hospital has set out a clear strategic plan in which employees are at the heart of its vision of the future. A key mechanism to achieve and sustain this is through a PPDS.
The purpose of the PPDS is to assist employees in understanding and developing their role in implementing the Hospitals strategy and to value the part that they and the department of laboratory medicine play in that process. Please refer to HR-GEN-0046 for further details
