Fisheries Officer Job Description

The Fisheries Officer plays a pivotal role in the implementation and enforcement of key regulations, ensuring compliance with relevant statutory provisions.

Responsibilities include:

  • Patrolling water bodies to detect and deter illegal fishing activities
  • Monitoring commercial salmon fisheries and protecting spring salmon and grilse runs
  • Detecting and preventing illegal netting in rivers and sea
  • Protecting bass and bluefin tuna fisheries
  • Conducting environmental inspections and collaborating with colleagues to address pollution concerns
  • Gathering evidence, reporting incidents, and providing testimony in court proceedings
  • Inspecting commercial Salmon & Sea Trout licence holders and recreational anglers for compliance with regulations
  • Issuing Fixed Penalty Notices as necessary and seizing equipment where required
  • Assisting with general enquiries from the public and providing shore cover for local IFI protection staff on RIB patrols

Fisheries Conservation & Development:

  • Contributing to habitat improvement schemes, including improving access and infrastructure
  • Conducting research survey work and monitoring scientific data
  • Participating in electro-fishing and netting operations, collecting and examining fish specimens
  • Communicating effectively with stakeholders, such as An Garda Síochána, Angling Clubs, Fishermen, Community Development Groups, and other agencies
  • Providing support for angling festivals and competitions
  • Preparing reports and maintaining records as required

Requirements:

  • A minimum Leaving Certificate (Level 5 NFQ) or equivalent qualification
  • A valid full Category B driving licence for Ireland
  • No convictions under Irish Fisheries Legislation
  • Eligibility to work in the State
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Good computer skills, including Microsoft Office
  • Ability to reside close to base (within 60 minutes' drive)
  • Competence in both at-sea and freshwater environments
  • A passion for promoting, protecting, and conserving natural resources
