Lead Payroll Specialist

We are seeking an accomplished Payroll Manager to oversee payroll operations, ensuring seamless collaboration with restaurant groups and external partners.

This role is ideal for a seasoned professional with extensive experience in UK & Ireland payroll, a background in bureau or client-facing environments, and a drive to succeed in a fast-paced startup setting.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Client Partnership: Serve as the primary payroll contact for clients, guiding them through onboarding, implementation, processing, and ongoing support.
  • Processing: Manage the full payroll pipeline (from pre-sale through live), collaborate with Sales and CS, and own client payroll calendars.
  • Bureau Management: Coordinate with our external payroll bureau to ensure accurate and timely processing for all client accounts.
  • Compliance & Regulation: Maintain payroll processes compliant with HMRC, PAYE, NI, pensions, holiday pay, and other regulations, staying up-to-date with legislative changes.
  • Process Improvement: Standardize workflows across clients, streamline for efficiency, and partner with Product/Engineering to develop smarter payroll tools.
  • Internal Expertise: Be the in-house payroll expert, addressing queries and ensuring teams have the necessary documentation and guidance.
Key Requirements:
  • Excellent knowledge of UK & Ireland payroll legislation; US payroll knowledge is a plus.
  • Experience in client-facing payroll roles, ideally within a bureau or agency setup.
  • Confidence with payroll systems, HMRC submissions, BACS, Auto Enrolment, P11Ds, and payroll journals.
  • Solid Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel.
  • Organisational skills and attention to detail – juggling multiple client deadlines with ease.
  • Clear, confident communication skills to work across clients, third parties, and internal teams.
  • A sense of ownership: spotting problems and taking proactive steps to resolve them.
  • Startup mentality: proactive, resourceful, and comfortable wearing many hats.
