About the Role

This position involves working on rail projects to protect the environment and biodiversity.

The team ensures that engineering work is carried out while adhering to legislation, including the Wildlife (Amendment) Act. The Ecologist will offer specialist support for ecological management and biodiversity, ensuring compliance with legislation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform aquatic and terrestrial ecological surveys, preparing Appropriate Assessment Screening for railway maintenance work.
  • Create and implement ecological improvement initiatives to enhance biodiversity along the rail network.
  • Help develop vegetation management plans.
  • Liaise with stakeholders, external ecological consultants, and groups interested in biodiversity and ecology.
  • Prepare reports highlighting progress in meeting biodiversity targets and legislative requirements.
  • Provide training and talks to staff on ecological and biodiversity best practices.
  • Maintain an Invasive Species database with an action plan for eradication.
  • Assess environmental complaints resulting from maintenance works.
  • Work with local authorities and statutory bodies regarding railway maintenance programmes.
  • Measure and deliver on biodiversity targets set out in the company's sustainability strategy.
Requirements
  • Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management or related body.
  • Driving licence.
  • Post-graduate experience in an Ecologist role.
  • Experience in biodiversity and ecological management plans.
  • Excellent reporting, communication, time management, and organisational skills.
