Clinical Nurse Manager Role

This is a clinical position with an educational focus. The main goal of this role is to create and maintain an environment that supports the professional nurse in providing excellent patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • In the absence of the CNM2, responsibilities include Bed Management, Staffing, Clinical Practice, Standards Quality and striving for safer better healthcare.
  • Patient Accommodation: Assist the CNM2 or Directorate Nurse Manager in implementing the bed management policy by managing the utilization of patient accommodation and ensuring appropriate activities are carried out.
  • Work Estimation: Decide with the CNM2 how to allocate work to staff nurses, student nurses and healthcare assistants, and ensure a systematic method for assessment of individual patient needs and proper documentation.
  • Staffing and Manpower Planning: Prepare weekly duty rosters for each shift and review/changes roster as necessary, advising the CNM2 when staffing levels fall below adequate to meet workload variations.
  • Personnel: Promote high staff morale, team spirit and job satisfaction, ensuring welfare and safety policies are adhered to and participating in ward orientation for new staff.
  • Education/Staff Development: Assess training needs for nursing staff and health care assistants, participate in setting objectives and developing training programmes, and identify teaching opportunities and plans to meet needs with CNM2.
  • Clinical Nursing Practice: Use a nursing framework to assess patient needs, plan appropriate nursing care, and ensure accurate verbal and written nursing reports.
  • Standards and Quality of Care: Safeguard patient welfare and safety, monitor quality indicators, ward management and standards, and ensure compliance with HIQA hygiene standards.
  • Self Development: Maintain professional development records, participate in annual appraisal, and discuss performance and development needs with management.
