Overall Purpose of Job

Beacon Hospital has an academic partnership with University College Dublin and one of our main goals is to support the clinical education program in the UCD School of Medicine.

The clinical tutor plays a key role in identifying important teaching moments for our undergraduate students during their experiential learning. They are part of a community of academic staff passing on their clinical knowledge to the next generation of medical professionals.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables: Clinical Tutor

  • Coordinate and engage in student teaching and training at Beacon Hospital.
  • Provide tutorial support and foster shared learning experiences for students on placements.
  • Deliver lectures as part of the clinical curriculum and assist in preparing clinical examinations.
  • Supervise student clinical activities according to their competence.
  • Use various teaching and assessment methods to demonstrate clinical learning opportunities.
  • Collaborate with UCD staff to ensure placements meet academic requirements.
  • Orient and evaluate medical students at Beacon Hospital.
  • Participate in the assessment of interns using competency framework tools.
  • Support students' professional and personal development during their placement.
  • Act as a resource for students seeking specialty guidance.
  • Ensure relevant information on student progress is shared with the hospital and UCD.
  • Adhere to hospital policies and procedures to optimize patient care and uphold the hospital's reputation.
  • Contribute to quality improvement and policy development for enhanced clinical education.
  • Develop tutorial content for different modules each year.
  • Engage in research and scholarly activities as appropriate.
  • Promote student participation in clinical audits to maintain quality standards.
  • Report to the clinical lead consultant on matters related to students and interns.

Person Specification

  • Qualifications
    • Current Full Irish Medical Council Registration.
    • MRCS/Membership of relevant college desirable.
  • Experience
    • Minimum 3 years postgraduate experience in acute hospital setting.
    • Experience in student and junior staff education.
    • Experience in managing underperforming staff or students.
    • Attendance at clinical tutor trainee days required.
  • Job Specific Competencies and Knowledge
    • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize work.
    • Experience in quality assurance and teamwork.
    • Adaptability to change and willingness to undergo further training.
